Formation myth.

Why do we persist on a system of playing 2 sitting mid-fielders and one up front, We are not good enough to play two up front, we will get ripped apart are the usual replies.

Just watching Ireland playing with a diamond midfield and two up top, Wales played a 5-3-2.

Albania, Slovakia and Romania all lined up with 4-3-3. Are we seriously suggesting these countries have better players at their disposal.

Surely Strachan has to change from his system at some point especially against Malta and Lithuania.

The 4-3-3 is very similar to our 4-2-3-1. Both have a single central striker supported by two wingers. In fact you could argue out formation is more attacking because we give our "10" a free role to support the centre forward whereas the 4-3-3 has essentially three holding midfielders.

I've been wanting us to play a 5-3-2 for years. The only downside to that formation is that you're relying on your wingbacks to double up as full backs and wingers. The pay off though is fantastic, you gain an extra centre-back and an extra centre forward whilst still having three central midfielders. It can be an absolute disaster if you don't have good enough players to man the wing back position but Anya and Robertson are two of our best players. Look at Wales, Gunter and Taylor are two of their unsung heroes who they rely on in many ways

GK David Marshall

RWB Ikechyi Anya

RCB Russell Martin

CB Grant Hanley

LCB Charlie Mulgrew

LWB Andy Robertson

RCM James Morrison

CM James McArthur

LCM Barry Bannan

RCF Steven Naismith

LCF Steven Fletcher

What a fucking moron.

Barca and Bayern play 4-2-3-1 and win all their games, so thats the tactic we should use. But wait, Spain and Germany play without a real centre forward and win World Cups, so thats how we should play!

Can't see how it won't work for us if it works for them!

Usual over the top reply from Random guy.

Spain and Germany have better players than us.

My point which you obviously missed is how are countries with players you wouldn't say were better than ours getting to major tournaments playing attacking formations.

We haven't qualified for 18 years because we play negative, backs to the wall football.

Scotland have set the team up as a defensive unit for as long as I can remember. No balls to go out swinging and see where it takes us.

I would always prefer to lose having a go than the dross served up over the last 2 decades. Strachan says the players are scared. I say he is the 1 scared

No, your scrambling about for some bollocks excuse to try and convince yourself you're brighter than everyone else and have sussed out our problem. Your theory is a load of fucking shite considering we were more attacking than both Irish sides and numerous European sides in the qualifiers.

Got any facts to back up that statement, bearing in mind we didn't have a shot on goal in Gerogia. Sat back against Ireland when we got the equaliser in Dublin and were quite lucky to beat them at Celtic park.

Granted we had a good go at the poles at Hampden but by that point it was win or bust.

Not trying to convince myself of anything, just suggesting different ideas on how we can qualify so i don't have to sit here and watch Ireland, Wales, Northern Ireland fans enjoying the experience  and thinking what are we doing wrong.

Point is they qualified for the finals likely playing the same formation.

I would say they quite clearly have. I don't think any formation would have seen us through. We're pish, and likely to remain pish for the foreseeable,

Still, no harm in looking at different ways of setting up to see if we can get the most out of our sorry shower of shite.

As mentioned earlier, Wales, Norn Iron etc seem to be quite comfortable switching between 4231, 442 and 352/532. I think we've blinkered ourselves into thinking its 4231 or bust. It's a useful system but we need to have another trick or two to tackle certain opponents

Mistakes like that are amusing when you're trying to lament someone for being an idiot.
