                                                                Monday 9th May 2016

                                                              MARYHILL 1   NEILSTON 0

The first division promotion race took a dramatic turn as Maryhill’s victory allied to Wishaw’s defeat by Lesmahagow means that wins in their final two games will see Maryhill promoted. However, Wishaw have the advantage of both a much better goal difference and not having to play again this week. Maryhill, on the other hand, must continue with their demanding three games a week programme, which is beginning to take its toll. All in all, it should certainly make for an exciting end to the season.

With Neilston still not clear of relegation worries, this was certainly far from a typical end of season encounter for both teams. The first half saw Maryhill have the bulk of the pressure and Neilston keeper James Digney did well to save efforts from William Wells and Jamie Docherty early on. Midway through the half the visitors came more into the game, and only a fortunate block by Hill keeper Grant Hay from a powerful Robert Cameron free kick prevented them from taking the lead. In the last fifteen minutes, Maryhill regained the upper hand with Wells and Docherty again coming very close to scoring, and a Kieran Furay ‘goal’  correctly disallowed for offside.

Half Time – Maryhill 0  Neilston 0

After the break, it took Hill only a couple of minutes to score what proved to be the winning goal. Following a spell of activity around the visitors’ penalty area, a fierce shot from Kieran Furay beat the keeper, but struck the foot of the post. JUSTIN BEGG was quickest to react and his shot flew high into the net put Maryhill ahead. Despite further pressure, and good scoring attempts from Wells, Docherty and Furay, Maryhill were unable to get a second goal. With five minutes remaining, Paul McLernon’s over reaction to a challenge from Robert Cameron earned him a red card from referee Fabrice Dubois, and made for a nervous end to the game. Grant Hay saved well from a Kevin Kelly free kick, but despite some further Neilston pressure in the final minutes, Maryhill held out for a deserved three points.

Yeah, just a few games ago it looked certain that Wishy would be promoted and now,as you say,Maryhill go into their final two games knowing that victories will see them go up,but any slip ups will hand the initiative back to their Lanarkshire rivals.Exciting times indeed.

Good report btw bud, though sorry to see that your caps lock seems to be broken.  :(
