Number of different spells with one club

Paul McManus has joined East Fife for a fourth spell at the club. Certainly an EFFC record. Has this happened elsewhere in Scottish football?

Doesn't have to have been Paul McManus - any player... 8)

Can't think of 4 off the top of my head but both Alan Lithgow and Marc McCusker had 3 spells at Clyde.

Lithgow actually played with us for 3 consecutive seasons but could count as 3 spells as he was released at end of first season then never signed a new deal at end of second season but came back when he couldn't find another club.

Derek Lyle is technically currently in his fourth different spell at QoS, and had a loan spell away in the middle of one of those!

We signed him on loan from Partick Thistle in early 2002. He returned to Thistle and signed a new contract with them but we then bought him in the summer of 2002 before the next season started so that was two different spells, albeit he hadn't played a game for Thistle before we brought him back.

He left us for Stirling Albion on loan in early 2004. Before the start of 2004/05 he negotiated his release to join Dunfermline Athletic. It was originally intended to be a loan but Dunfermline were trying to get David Fernandez in on loan at the time and SPL rules only allowed one loan player so the deal with us became a permanent transfer with an understanding on all fronts that he would come back if he didn't break through at Dunfermline. It didn't work out for him and rejoined us in late 2004, staying through to August 2006 when he left for Dundee.

After spells with Hamilton (twice), Morton & Cowdenbeath we re-signed him in August 2012.

We also signed Jamie Adams on four different loan spells from Kilmarnock over 4 seasons starting in 2006-07.

McCusker actually had 4 spells. First on loan from Hearts, then a permanent deal after that. He returned after a spell with Albion Rovers, then later came back on loan from Dumbarton. I only count Lithgow as having 1 spell.

I'm not sure if Sandy Wood counts for this as well. He was with Montrose U18s before being sold to Celtic. He was loaned back a couple of years later. He then signed permanently in 2010, left, and came back again last July for his fourth spell.

I can think of a number of players who have had 2 spells at QP but not anyone with 3 or more. Other QP fans may correct me on this. There's not likely to be many because I'm pretty sure we had a rule of some sort that when a player left and turned pro they couldn't then become amateur again. One exception I know of was the famous RS McColl who started his career with QP in 1894 then returned for a second spell in 1912 after playing as a pro for Rangers and Newcastle.

Edited to add: I've mentioned him in another topic but Frankie Carroll had 3 spells with us, 1999-2001, 2003-2007 then for a few months from 2009-2010. I don't imagine we have too many other examples.
