Goalkeepers Gloves or no gloves

I've just been watching old YouTube videos of games in the 1960s 1970s and the number of keepers who didn't wear gloves was quite high. Would be interested to hear from keepers on the pro's and cons to either, maybe one for JC to expand on. I remember the early gloves were more like today's gardening gloves, cotton material with dimpled rubber on the palms and fingers etc

I actually have and starting again to manufacture my own branded gloves. Pros are endless but most important pros are a good latex palm which is vital in our times as balls are made with various materials now the palms are tacky to hold the ball. Also palms have to be about 3-4 mm thick as it's good padding although too thick and you can't get a feel of the ball too thin it's nippy hands. I'll be honest our generation are soft compared to the boys years ago. They boys would work in mines ect and have hands like leather these days guys are more into moisturiser ect I could talk about this all night about different palm cuts ect but I'll not bore yous

A glazier mate of mine brought his work gloves to 5s once safe to say never again.

The same game of 5s one of the guys when it's his turn still puts the sondico's on, only when it's his turn. There's about 3 goals that go in before he's got them on though.

I remember in the 1980s decent gloves cost a fortune, there were adverts in Shoot mag, match mag etc and a decent pair of reulch (probably wrong spelling) were about £30, which was 3 times the price of a kids umbro kit box set, so we always had the cheap efforts with the rubber dimples

The Shoot magazine glove adverts were like glove porn in my youth.

You learnt the hard way that the more expensive the glove the softer and quicker the palms got damaged. Used to play in them till your fingers wore a hole in them and were actually more of a hindrance than a help but to be Andy Goram you needed to look the part with all the gear and no idea.

I remember Campbell Money gave his gloves to someone at the Beith Gala day beat the goalie competition instead of the £1 prize money. Not sure if he pocketed the said £1 but the boy was none to pleased at the mud caked Reusch efforts.

Your right there. I can remember paying £25-£30 for a decent pair of UHL or Sondico one's back in the early 80's and they were pretty flimsy with being prone to ripping easy especially as you played on frost-rutted pitches. Neither wonder I ended up playing outfield.

JC was in Behalts I think, but is making his own now (if I remember your tweets correctly!) My brother's got a few pairs of Behalts and loves them. I bought The Ones over Christmas, to replace my gubbed Alerts I used at training and they're pretty decent. Good value as well.

I remember that day in Beith well. It was Joseph Stevenson that got the gloves from Campbell Money & they had a massive hole in one of them. He eventually passed them on to me & I sewed the hole shut as I used to do with all my gloves that burst. I miss the gloves more than I miss playing these days. Nothing better than when u got a new pair & were using them for the first few times. My favourite ever pair were uhlsport & they were the ones that Peter Shilton wore at Itilia 90. Also loved a pair of sondico smg like Andy Goram used to wear. Sounds a bit sad but this is what gets us crazy goalies buzzing.

No one makes their own gloves.
You can now latch onto certain low cost manufacturers who customise them to your requirements.

The high cost branded gloves are like football kit. A complete rip off in terms of mark up.

In my day I used to buy comparitavely low cost umbro gloves. The grobelaars were the finest while available at around £20

Pic below.

As opposed to the poster above I hated new gloves. They were too "good", and I was much more into the feel side of a good old worn in pair on my hands.

I remember my first game when asked to play in the goal in an adult ammy match at 15. I used gardening gloves pic below.

The most common injury (you only ever had 8 lifetime) was staived fingers in the 80s. The fecking mitre multiplex was a b*****d of a heavy ball.
