Standard

Just a question, this season is really my first venture into junior football, previously I've been heavily involved in amateur.

Currently we are in division two but I don't see much of a difference in standard from most of the well run amateur leagues and teams.

Any thoughts?

IMO West Region marginally stronger than the East. Although maybe this year it could be evensteven . Pollok/Talbot/Medda/Hurlford/Glenafton are the So called big teams in the West. East has Linlithgow/Bonnyrigg/Bo'Ness and Lochee I would say dominate there. North I am not so sure sorry.

Overall difference between Junior and Amateur may just be fitness and players getting time off to get to their games. Not much between I believe

Most of the difference is just in the naming of the grade they're playing in - there isn't a huge difference between the higher levels of the amateur game and the lower end of the junior game - there might even be more money (unofficially!) in the former, in much the same way as there isn't a massive gulf between the higher levels of the junior game and the lower level of the seniors.

Juniors are much better.

I think the inclusion of Lochee as one of the current dominant teams in the East kind of devalues your opinion a tad. Not that you are necessarily wrong in the broader supposition.

Most lower division teams would struggle in the top central amateur league in my opinion. Colville park a side (would be interesting to see how they get on against a super league side), the rest of the central ammy prem teams would deffo compete in the lower 2 divs in juniors.

I think it would be more likely that they’d get some good one-off results, but over the course of the season they might find it more of a slog.

I’ve seen some amateur teams get good results against Junior sides in friendlies, but you can often tell one side’s taking it deadly serious to claim a scalp and the other is treating it like a bounce game. Much the same often happens when a Junior side faces an SPFL club in a friendly – it means a lot more to the lower grade outfit.

I suspect would be a bit different in a competitive game – Ayrshire District side Girvan dealt with last year’s amateur cup winners Harestanes fairly comfortably away in the “big” Scottish.

I wouldn't disagree with most of your post, however I'm led to believe they lost 2/3' of there best players (one I know of currently doing very well for Cumbernauld colts), they also didn't have a keeper for that day IIRC. There results weren't great at start of the season in the league either but seem to be picking up now.

I dare say if they had the same team it would have been much closer.

I would love to see how Colville park would get on in super league, they have quality through out squad and plenty of depth, enough for 2 extremely strong sides of 11 I'm led to believe.

Did a game between Colville and Greenock not get abandoned last season?? . Think nock were humping them and colville started to lose the plot ,then the game was cut short . Colville have some good players but a scheme-team mentality ,not good enough for the top tier in the juniors

Think that game was Wellhouse and not Colville.

In my experience and listening to old Camby managers, the biggest difference is attitude. Amature players with amature attitudes to quote one of them. Many many players have came from amature football and because they don't walk into a team or are on the bench one week they want released. Having said that plenty gems picked up from the amature leagues go to top junior sides.

Every time Whitehill play an amateur team it seems to end in a rammy. Not the first time the ref has just abandoned it.

Hope I'm not out of line here but it seems to me that most of the WW players tend to be young lads who've been released by senior clubs after doing an apprenticeship. So they have the discipline, maybe the amateurs haven't been that route.

Was wellhouse and if remember correctly it was Greenock who were down 3 zip and started leaving the boot in.

Apologies my bad. I should have said Kelty not Lochee poor show no excuse :-/

Think Lochee has always stayed in the back of my head after they pumped us out the Scottish a few seasons ago.

I would be very surprised if that was Colville to be honest. Bannockburn have had a bit of trouble with discipline in the past, can't think of anyone else it could have been if it was a team from the central.

I was in attendance at the Harestanes v Girvan game that was in question. The amateurs were shown up big time that day imo, by a more average Junior side.

The difference between the two teams was the discipline, in terms of positioning, shape and organisation on the pitch. Yes Harestanes were missing a couple of bodies, but the junior side were comfortable in there victory and looked as if they couldve stepped up a gear if required.

The Amateurs were looking to catch the Juniors on the counter, or to score via a set piece, penalty etc. Very rarely troubling Girvan from what I remember.

Yes, this was only one example, but I think it would've been interesting if they were to have been playing a Linlithgow or a Talbot.
