Deanburn Dave
Several papers are running this story today. The bit below was from the online version of The Sun. Cause for concern or OTT media reporting ? "HEALTH concerns over the safety of artificial football pitches are growing after a study suggested the rubber material could be a cause of cancer. British football chiefs are being encouraged to investigate after an American study showed hundreds of US player's cancer diagnoses were linked to the rubber substance. Amy Griffin, football coach at the University of Washington, has been researching the claim and is said to have found 158 cases of footballers with the illness. Around 60% of the footballers with cancer were goalkeepers and the 50-year-old is convinced their illness is connected to a material called crumb rubber fill. The substance is made from old tyres and when used to make 3G pitches it is blended with toxic chemicals such as mercury, lead, benzene and arsenic. It is these chemicals that some US families believe are causing the disease. Goalkeepers could be at an increased risk of developing cancer due to having more contact with the pitch as a result of jumping, diving and skidding along the surface. Some professional clubs in the UK are in discussions with FIFA over the health fears. But the makers of turf, originally designed by Monsanto, deny the allegations. Thousands of parks, schools and professional pitches have installed the convenient surface across the UK. It is assumed that players develop the disease by accidentally swallowing the black pellets or getting them lodged in open cuts during a match. Natural alternatives such as coconut husk could replace the toxic crumb rubber fill."
topcat(The most tip top)
There's no quantification of the risk quoted in that article So it might well be one of thousands insignificant weak correlations that get reported in on slow news days. Lex
Very interesting to see mercury quoted as many experts say that the mercury in vaccines is the reason for the high rates in cancer in the western world What?!
Lex
Have a wee read about mercury and squalene in vacinations Have a wee read of a science book. There's more mercury in tuna than there is in a vaccine. Vaccines are perfectly safe and are responsible for wiping out several diseases and improving and saving the life of millions. Don't believe all the crap you read on the Internet.

Nipples
I remember all too well - was covered in mounds of the black stuff that made it lumpier than most of the grass bogs found on council pitches! Much better now, just a shame its more black than green.
Man on a bike
This article gives a bit more detail. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/investigations/how-safe-artificial-turf-your-child-plays-n220166 I think clubs who use surfaces like those referred to might want to check their liability insurance. Who knows who might come knocking on their door in 10 years time?

peasy23
Why don't they just make the pellets green? They do, but they are much more expensive than black ones.
wishyman
I was standing in a pile of the stuff today at the K park in EK. My feet get freezing with bad circulation, does a good job of insulating your feet. Heard it here first!
