OF Neutral Venues outwith Glasgow

I can probably answer this myself by looking things up - but when did Rangers or Celtic last play a Scottish Cup or League Cup final or semi-final outside of Glasgow, and how often has it happened?

You could add the Drybrough Cup if you liked, although I'm unsure if its SFs were at neutral venues. EDIT: It seems they were not.

Of course 2 seasons ago Rangers v Raith Rovers - the Challenge Cup Final - was in Edinburgh.

I suspect it's been quite rare.

That wasn't a neutral venue, though, tbf.

Scottish Cup SFs weren't played at neutral venues until 1911-12 (although Rangers struck a deal with Partick to play at Ibrox in 1921-22).

League Cup SFs were also sometimes played over 2 legs.

Fair point.

We have never played a Scottish Cup or League cup final outside of Glasgow, and the only semi final I have found played outside of Glasgow was the Dumbarton game, which, like you say, wasn't a neutral venue.

You've made an obvious error here

Slightly off topic but Celtic have played a home European tie in England.

Yip, that was against Rapid Vienna and was played at Old Trafford because of crowd trouble at Parkhead.

They've also played Aberdeen at Dens Park, but that was back in the days when they had a second replay instead of extra time and penalties.

Rangers played a European home tie in Sweden.

East German side Vorwaerts Berlin were refused visas for the UK, as was the case in the earlier round when they weren't allowed to travel to play Linfield.

The Rangers programme for the game is worth about a squillion quid. Well, I saw one for sale at £600 about five years ago. Must be a squillion quid now.

A couple second replays being spoke about here, I assume second replays were played at neutral venues between the two then?

Yeah, they still played second replays up until the late '80s.

I believe they tried to make it somewhere in the middle. For example Montrose once played Hearts at Muirton Park in Perth back in the '70s.

Second (and onward) replays occurred up until 1988-89, after which replays went to extra-time and penalties... final replays were also removed at that time. For a long time there was the anomaly of Semi-Final replays, despite those being played at neutral venues; but they were stopped after Hibs and Dunfermline had to traipse across to Hampden for a second time in 2006-07 before a crowd only 30% that of the first attempt.

(Worth saying that temporary measures applied for a few seasons in the late 1940s due to a ban on midweek football during the fuel crisis and worries over industrial output. Various measures applied during this time including result-on-the-day, extra-time in first replay and even "next goal the winner" - e.g. Hibs 2-1 Motherwell in 1946-47 Semi-Finals lasted for 142 minutes).

However it was not always the case that second (and onward) replays went to neutral venues. Usually two types of cases did not...

Firstly, a replay with two small clubs based some distance apart might see them agree to play it at whoever hosted the first tie - or maybe toss a coin; otherwise they risked a small crowd, and had to pay a ground rental as well.

Secondly, big clubs would sometimes offer a financial incentive to bring the second replay back to their own ground. This sometimes even happened with first ties. It might take the form of a fixed money payment, or a fixed increase in their % gate.

e.g. to consider Rangers again:

1897-98 ... Rangers v Third Lanark - second replay at Cathkin

1932-33 ... Rangers v Queen's Park - second replay at Hampden

1949-50 ... Rangers v Raith Rovers - second replay at Ibrox

1953-54 ... Third Lanark v Rangers - second replay at Ibrox

1976-77 ... Rangers v Clydebank - LC SF replay (after 2-legged tie) at Ibrox; second replay was at Firhill

As noted above, Rangers also reached a deal with Partick Thistle to play 1921-22 Semi-Final at Ibrox.

It wasn't unknown for big clubs - particularly OF - to pay opponents to scratch. Last case of this, to much criticism, was Berwick v Celtic in 1935-36.

While we're off topic, didn't Rangers play some Irish team at Tranmere's ground back in the '90s?

Yep, was Advocaat's first game in charge iirc. Rangers were 3-0 down to Shelbourne before coming back to win 5-3.

Rugby Park and Carlisle's Brunton Park were both also mooted for this game, but were ruled out as being too close to Glasgow.
