Yeah, doubt they'll be first to make it to League Two but East Kilbride are the best bet for eventually being able to establish themselves as one of the top part-time clubs in the country, or perhaps even going full-time somewhere down the line. Could see them being a Livingston size club without the incessant financial problems, whereas most other sides either have a bigger side to compete with close by or simply don't have the catchment area and same potential to develop.

Given the size of the place, and potential fan base, you'd think East Kilbride might be a good shout.

Wasn't going to Cumbernauld a good shout for Clyde as well?

The problem with that idea is the amount of folk who moved to new towns, or satellite towns, of Glesga took their allegiances with them and they've been passed onto sons and daughters. Think it'll take a long time for EK or Colts to get a proper fanbase goin'.

I now have Zagar and Evans "In the year 2525" going through my head....

In the year 2025 will City still be alive?

Fair play to EK - they're starting from scratch and not being a failed franchise like other clubs in Scotland's New Towns we could mention..

...you reckon any of the current Lowland League sides will have made it up to Championship level?

And, if so, who's most likely?*

*taking away the chance of a Dubai consortium buying Selkirk or the like

Grim will be on shortly saying Spartans will be in the Champions League by 2025.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't think anyone will reach the Championship by then. Playing wise could see City building on the experience of last year and pushing for promotion. Other than that I'd say East Kilbride or Cumbernauld Colts who will only get stronger.

If you look at the teams which joined SFL (as was) since Inverness CT and Ross County did, none of them have made it to tier 2 except Gretna, and it was only with Mileson's ££. However, Peterhead have come very close (penalties in a playoff final IIRC?).

Meadowbank almost made it to tier 1 back in the day, but there were far fewer full-time teams then.

So my expectations would be that, under current arrangements, we'll see perhaps 3 LL clubs promoted over the next 10yrs - and some could establish themselves in SPFL1.

Although ye can't tell how teams from the bigger toons will do and, hopefully, they put a lot of effort into getting youngsters turned toward the local teams rather than the Old Firm I still think it'll be more than 10+ years before EK and Colts start getting the sort of crowds that would allow them to reach that level.

I reckon someone like Gala would be most likely in that time frame. I understand their crowds have took a large jump by entering the LL. It's a sporting town (albeit rugby) and I could see them doing a Stranraer or Brechin and making it up despite coming from a smaller town

Large catchment area though?

Not really. I can't see folk from Melrose supporting Gala for instance and Selkirk aint far away.but they could have a small, committed fanbase that could reach 500+ with a bit of success behind them.

I was involved in the whole merger carry-on in Sneckie. Despite Matt Hall's valiant attempts to talk up the demand for football in the 'Central Borders' I don't think they would have matched even Annan or Elgin's achievements on the pitch.

I remember going to a Cup game at Netherdale v Arbroath around then. It only mustered about 550 which would count as a healthy gate nowadays, but was peanuts compared to what Caley and County were getting back then, and also teams like Huntly who were flying.

Fair play to them now they've merged with the Rovers but how many GFR fans do you ever see on here?

So would East Stirling drop out to say let EK dodgy in?

As much as I would love to see it happening for the likes of Gala, being a realist I can say with certainty that unless there is a massive change in culture in the Borders then it will never happen!

The changes would have to start at grass roots school level and work all the way through to local industry and media before we can start to produce and attract players as well as sizeable crowds!

We are miles behind the rest of Scotland when it comes to footy despite GFRs recent great efforts at youth level and massive changes are required!
