Stranraer v Buckie Thistle

Moonball

Recommended Posts

Following two consecutive draws, Stranraer will be keen to finally chalk up their first win since 3rd October, and first home win since 5 September. On recent evidence they'll have to raise their game a fair bit to do so against a Buckie Thistle side that will undoubtedly be well up for this.

Hopefully no passengers this weekend.

I'd go 4-3-1-2:

McGurn

Robertson Rumsby Keenan Pettigrew

McCluskey Thomson McGill

Malcolm

Longworth Nequecaur

That's the line-up I reckon most blues fans would want to see, but I'd be amazed if that's the XI that start on Saturday.

I don't believe Buckie will be overly anxious about anything other than the journey down and back considering our current run of form.

I'm hoping of course that I'm proved wrong, that the Teuchters buckle as soon as they arrive at our imposing arena, and that Nequecuar finally gets off the mark in a 4-1 romp.

Always hoping.

Think we will win this game comfortably enough tomorrow. Highland league has went down in standard recently - top few teams still strong but Buckie ain't a top team. So am taking Stranraer to win by at least two goals and at least one goal for the big Argy!

Well it wasn't as comfortable as I had hoped but we won and in a cup tie that is the main thing. Buckie tried to play football and apart from the OTT tackle which resulted in their red card did themselves credit. Stranraer deserved to win but at times there wasn't a great deal in it - no denying the fact Buckie could have scored more than 1 goal. Still some worrying signs from a Stranraer perspective against a team that were clearly a lot weaker than what we will face in the league. Nevertheless when you are struggling any win has to be a welcome one.

In summary:

POSITIVES

Thought McGuigan played well and nice to see his efforts be rewarded with a goal

First goal for our Argentinian striker (wasn't particularly impressed with his overall performance tbh)

In the first half I thought Cairney was a bit better (before he reverted to his usual level in the 2nd half)

Subs Turner and McGill both looked lively and dangerous against a tiring Buckie side

NEGATIVES

Still not keen on Bell playing at the back whilst Robertson plays in midfield

Barron looks like he might still be a yard off the pace

The two strikers didn't link up as well as I would have liked

Finally fair play to a decent sized Buckie support who created a bit of atmosphere - hope they enjoyed their day.

Good report agree with Cairney, faded in second half, but put in a lot of crosses today 22 we counted, still don't 100% fit needs to lose more weight.

Nice to get a win. Thought Malcolm worked his socks off an probably deserved a goal for his endeavour.

McGuigan for me is not a wide player, too often needing advice from the bench positionally. Had a few good runs though and took his goal well.

Turner and McGill looked really positive when added however, thought it was an ideal opportunity to introduce Rowan with five to go and the game pretty much won.

Down side, Cairnry giving the ball away again for a goal, Thompson getting another needles booking and lack of a forward on the bench.

Well done to Buckie who had a few good chances of their own and brought a better support than most of our league opponents.

Shocker for the sending off though. Turner just about to role the ball out of play for an injured player and Angus goes right through him from behind.

Take another Highland league side at home in the next round.

Presume the draw will be carried out in a Glasgow William Hill store with a Z list celeb?

Think Bell looks assured enough at centre back, he's not really done it in his natural position though. Robertson played most of his games for Stirling Albion in centre mid. Think with him sitting it gets more out of Thompson, allowing him to get forward more.

Bell was one of the best centre mids in League 1 for two seasons running. Yes he hasn't been as good this season but we are still in November and his season has once again been disrupted by injury. I don't think we will maximise what he can bring to the team by playing him at the back. Also I think Paul Cairney's form and fitness in that area of the park has left other players like Bell exposed.

Regardless of whether he played there for Stirling I just don't see Robertson as a midfielder. For me a committed player and a good ball winner but to play in that area of the park you need more guile, better awareness and good distribution. Might work okay in a game where the main focus is on defending but I would prefer to see him at right back where he can still bomb forward - something he used to do effectively. Centre midfield is a more complicated position to play and for me Bell is a better fit in there.

As always just my opinion though.

Rumours going around up in Ayrshire Longworth is on his way out. Just rumours talk is Dumbarton and Ayr interested.

Naughty Naughty,Jammer had stitches in a head knock after a bounce game on Tuesday and couldn't play, two clubs mentioned one a former boss and the other likes Jammer tried to sign him for Thistle but couldn't get him due to financial restraints and signed Kris Doolan instead, still think Jammer is an important player for the blues and I'm quite sure the manager does as well.

According to the official site - 7 starts and 11 sub appearances this season. Guys a proven goalscorer and we have been struggling for goals all season. I noticed somebody on one of the forums saying that he hasn't scored so many over the last year......true BUT its a lot harder to score if you not on the pitch....even for somebody who scores when they want! Bottom line if you give Jamie a game every week he will get you goals (very much a confidence player) - best finisher in the squad by far. Most weeks Reid complains about missed chances but he has a readily available solution - just he chooses not to utilise it. Okay he was injured yesterday but injuries are not why he hasn't played much.
