Sad news if this is true good guys at crossgates as well and heard they been going for over 75 years

They were formed in 1926 so 89 years, although they folded in 1960 and reformed in 1983. Dunfermline took over Humbug Park in the 60s as their training ground.

Hopefully they will find folk to reform and comeback next season.

We played Crossgates only a couple of weeks ago and here’s what I wrote in the programme about them. The original club folded in 1961 The current club was formed in 1982:

Crossgates Thistle were the first Junior tenants of Humbug Park when they moved in during 1911 from a ground called Allan Park, but the club folded in 1916. The grounds unusual name derives from a disused pit of the former Cuttlehill Colliery, on which site the ground is located.

Primrose can trace their history back to 1921 to the formation of Crossgates Hearts Juveniles, who in 1927 stepped upto Junior status as Crossgates Primrose. In that first season in the Fife Junior League they finished a respectable 7th place with 10 wins from 22 matches. The also reach the final of the Cowdenbeath Cup which they lost to Dunnikier Juniors, however the following season they gained revenge over the same opponents after a replay. Humbug Park was substantially upgraded in 1933 and the club subsequently purchased the ground.

Although never winning the league, they have achieved a number of top three finishes including season 1947-48 where they scored a remarkable 120 goals and conceded 79 in 36 games! Lochgelly Albert and Lochore Welfare filled the top two places. The Fife Cup was won in a 4-1 win over Lochgelly’s second Junior team, Violet, and a win over Dundonald Bluebell secured the West Fife cup. This was Crossgates most successful period and crowds flocked to Humbug Park.

1952-53 season was their most successful run in the Scottish Junior Cup. Polkemmet were dispatched 5-1 in the first round, the second round saw a 4-3 win at Alva Albion Rangers, third round they received a bye before a fourth round single goal win at Crieff Earngrove. A record crowd reported to be in the region of 7,600 – necessitating on the club buying and installing 400 sleepers - watched the 5th round tie at Humbug Park against Auchinleck Talbot which was drawn 2-2, remarkably Primrose went to Ayrshire and came home with a 4-1 win. The quarter-finals again saw a trip to Aysrshire to Annbank United, a 2-2 draw was followed up by another at Humbug in front of nearly 5,000 before the second replay was lost 3-0 at Cambuslang. Annbank went on to the final where they lost to Vale of Leven.

The Fife Cup was claimed again in 1955-56 with a win over Newburgh, and the West Fife Cup in 1957-58 but by season 1960-61 Junior football was struggling in the Kingdom and the league was down to only 11 clubs. Primrose finished 8th but none the less folded at the end of the season and Humbug Park was sold to Jock Stein’s Dunfermline Athletic as a training ground.

A certain James Curran Baxter briefly turned out at Humbug Park during 1956/57 season before signing part-time for Raith Rovers and then a few seasons later Rangers, the rest they say is history. A cousin of Jim’s, George Kinnell joined Aberdeen from Primrose in February 1959 for £200 and made 130 appearances before moving on to Stoke City, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and finally Australia. Another International, fullback Willie Cunningham played for the club at the end of the war before moving to Dunfermline, Airdrie and then Preston North End where he made over 400 appearances and won 8 Scotland caps including captaining the team at the 1954 World Cup.

The club were reformed 1982 as a Juvenile side and they re-joined the Fife Junior League a year later after a gap of 21 years, and returned to Humbug Park (which had been sold back to the Council by the Pars) for their first match on 13th August 1983 in a win over Dundonald Bluebell.

Like ourselves, success has been hard to come by in the shadow of more illustrious neighbours, the late 1980’s was probably their best spell since returning, with a 1988-89 East Coast Windows Cup Final defeat to St.Andrews United followed a season later with a third place finish in the league behind St.Andrews and Hill of Beath. The same season saw a Cowdenbeath Cup Final loss to Hill of Beath and semi final appearances in both the Laidlaw Shield and League Cup. 1994-95 saw Kingdom Cup Final loss to Newburgh on penalties.

Great write up. In fact I award it 99.9/100. Two words missing though. Willie Butchart. What a character. Think he was the guy that signed Jim Baxter. Willie will be birling in his grave tonight. So many clubs operating these days with skeleton committee and sailing close to the wind. I take my hat off to them for keeping their local clubs alive. It's certainly no ego trip. For some, like Crossgates who were re-formed in 1983. Been on the go all that time and won the grand total of zilch. Like I say - no ego trip but their former committee members will have some happy memories of when they gubbed some of the 'big guns'. Here's hoping that they can regroup and make another comeback.

When the original Crossgates Primrose joined the juniors in 1927 they actually made the step up from secondary juvenile football. They played at that level from at least 25-6 to 26-7 seasons. I don't have any mention of Crossgates Hearts playing after 1921/22 season although there was a juvenile team called Crossgates Corinthians playing between the two periods.

Cheers Goggsy, I was trying to piece together the story from limited information!

had two seasons at xgates and was club captain. enjoyed my team there and it was probably about the last reasonably competative squad up there. beat kelty, st andrews and oakley in my last season and nobody came to the humbug expecting an easy game. Some great committee guys there over the years and a real shame this has happened. I know big davie mcneely worked with no money and really young players and hopefully the club can recruit and build towards next season and put a good side on the park again

Humbug Park is to good a name for football to lose as a venue.

Possibly only bettered by the now-defunct New Stevenston United's Klondyke Park.

On the subject of Crossgates, I hope they can find a way to regroup and come back - we played them in the Junior Cup a good few years ago and they were a good bunch of guys IIRC.

Club Statement:

Now that the dust has settled and meetings, correspondence & phone calls concluded, we wish to clarify the position as it now stands,

Crossgates Primrose JFC (Adults) has gone into abeyance for the remainder of season 2015/16, with the opportunity to return next season. In the meantime the Humbug, all Primrose money and accounts will be transferred to the CPJFC Youth committee, who will now manage the ground and facilities along with DALFC.

Lisa, Stacey, Flynn, Gavin and myself have taken the club as far as we can, we have continually asked for assistance both financially but most importantly new committee or volunteers to ease the burden. If the club are to survive it now needs new people on board with fresh ideas and financial backing, therefore if you would like to bring in a new committee and resurrect the junior team please get in touch as a matter of urgency and we will arrange a meeting.

The youth set up continues to prosper with another two new teams being formed for next season, this will ensure the name Crossgates Primrose Juniors will always be around the village.

We are honoured and privileged to have served this famous junior side, but our time has come to an end, so it is now time for a new regime please get in touch if interested, thank you.

CPJFC Committee
