Is there any point in having linesmen at games???

This was taken at Hermes v Gartcairn when it was 3 v 2. Gartcairn player is played onside by 2 maybe 3 players.

From watching a few games this season without linesmen i dont really see much difference.

haha see it every single week

In the seniors, it's increasingly the case that a linesman will wait for the referee to give his decision before pointing the flag one way or the other. Their name has changed to Assistant Referee suggesting an increase in responsibility, but the reality seems to be to the contrary.

A game without assistants is a total farce IMO.

The Assistant however, has made a mistake on this occasion.

Possibly his Under Armour vest caught a hair on his nipple & he raised his arm to free it.

Should always wear a simmit underneath your Under Armour layer.

Definitely need linesman refereeing at junior level. There has been several cases this season when teams in the super first have played games without them and it puts too much onus on the refs to make decisions without the support of assistants. It's a fairer game when you have linos

Any point in a Lino? Under certain circumstances yes there is. Not as comfortable under feet as a carpet and certainly not as pleasing on the eye as wooden flooring but for a cheap alternative to places where condensation may arise then yes there is a place for a Lino.

This has happened at all levels for as long as I can remember. The referee is the sole decision maker on the pitch and an assistant will indicate which way a throw-in is to be awarded only after the referee decides.

If the referee isn't sure, the assistant will give a subtle signal and more often than not the referee will agree and award the decision accordingly.

The alternative is that the assistant will indicate immediately and if the referee thinks differently then what you have is a mess and the impression that the officials aren't working as a team.

A linesman / Assistant ref who takes part in the game, supporting the ref by highlighting foul play are key to the game - as so much goes on the ref needs all the support they can get

A linesman who flags for offside and balls out of play and doesn't do anything else - well a committee man would just be as useful

I've spoken to a good few refs who have admitted that without lino's that they quite often have to guess at offsides as sometimes it's impossible to be near it and it's hard enough at times when even on line with it .

Assistant referees are vital for me and referees should use them to maximum potential and encourage them to be part of a team .

Without linesman the game sometimes become a game of hoofball with the ref just guessing what is offside. As a former ref, having done the job without linesman it's practically impossible and reduces the quality of the match.

As someone else pointed out, a lot of these linos are young guy learning their trade. It must be remembered what tier of football we are actually watching at junior level. Invariably the officials will make considerably less mistakes than the players, yet they get absolutely castigated for it.

So yes, is there any point in a Lino? Quite simply aye.

Looking at the shadows it appears the sun is blinding the assistant ref, he has his right hand up shielding his eyes. The winger makes a speculative run from deep and goes past the last defender at speed so it's understandable that the assistant makes a mistake. Pity, the guy was clean through and had a good chance of scoring. Tough!
