Great. It's official.

A manager who has only achieved any degree of success when given much greater resources than nearly all his rivals and has otherwise struggled, is getting another shot at leading our impoverished national team, having already screwed up in the role.

What can possibly go wrong here?

Hes not even been in charge for three years FFS, give him a break. He's the best we could get, regardless of all the hipster types in here wanking over Lagerback as if he's some form of messiah and not someone who couldnt give a flying shite about the whole infrastructure of the Scotland set up.

Disappointed, but ultimately it's time to get behind them again. Decision made, time to move on.

Yeah, this. This isn't a Levein scenario where it was absolutely open and shut that he had to go and obvious we'd be calling for his head again soon after, so time to get behind him and hope that the level of performance we saw at the start of this campaign can be maintained for the entirety of the next group.

The worst thing in this scenario is those who want Strachan punted will now be willing us to fail, just waiting to play the 'i told you so' card. Obviously they'll be guilty of the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy but that won't stop them.

Its rare for the media, fans ( even the ones that dont want him are not booing, yet) and players all to respect a manager at the same time.

To me this campaign is about building to the Euros. We have a very slim chance of qualifying. No chance of finishing 1st and even finishing 2nd doesn't guarantee you a play off.

Will be interesting to see how this group goes. Trying not to get too excited just now but I know by next September I'll be saving up for Russia!

What are our expectations? To be in contention with Slovakia with a couple of games to go? Finish ahead of Slovenia?

Is that seriously how you think this works?

Because I and others have been critical of Strachan, we want our national team to do badly in future, to struggle from the start of our next campaign?

How juvenile.

I really, really want Scotland to qualify for the next World Cup. My dissatisfaction with this manager doesn't change that.

Why would it?

Because to some people, winning an argument on the internet is more important than anything else. I agree, it's juvenile.

There are a few punters who would've preferred Strachan to go but who have now got behind him now that the decision has been made. Others have continued with the manager-bashing. I can almost guarantee that some posters will be all over the manager's (and by definition the team's) back as soon as we go a goal down in one of the qualifiers.

^^^ word salad

Thanks, always wanted to do that.

After the initial seethe of last weekend I eventually settled to the point where I simply wasn't really fussed who was in place for the next campaign. Whilst there are undoubtedly benefits to him continuing in the role - namely his positive relationship with players and knowledge of the domestic game - the defence of his campaign has been pedalled on the back of utter myths that don't stand to scrutiny, like 'we're making progress', 'we were unlucky' or 'we're playing better football': the fact of the matter is he did not meet expectations through dropping points to smaller nations, and as a result his campaign did not merit these levels of support.

Regardless he's been given the job, and he has to improve on his recent results to avoid an ugly ending.

Really? Who are these people?

Believe me, I'd much rather see Scotland in another tournament than be right about something on here.

However, should it go wrong again, I'll reserve the right to comment on it, pointing out where I think mistakes were made. I suspect there was one today.

We can save these posts and wait till we go a goal down somewhere - there'll be plenty. Football fans are fickle.

I'm not suggesting that people won't pounce on setbacks. I'll probably do it myself.

That's a long way however from suggesting that Scottish football fans will be praying for failure in the next campaign, in order to afford them that opportunity.
