ROSSVALE 1 MARYHILL 0

Maryhill’s poor run of form continued as they slumped to their third consecutive defeat at the hands of the current league leaders.

The first half was a poor affair, with neither side asserting themselves for any length of time. The first chance fell to Maryhill in the second minute, but Andy Monaghan’s over-hasty shot from a good position was mishit, and saved easily by home keeper Jordan Bowskill. The home side’s retaliation was a 25 yard drive from Jason McKay, which was well saved by Grant Hay. Both teams seemed content to use long ball tactics, and the match was certainly not shaping up like a battle between two promotion contenders. Maryhill had a brief period of dominance when three good attempts by Kieran Furay, and one from William Wells all came close to producing the games’ first goal, but Rossvale finished the half strongly, forcing a series of corners in injury time. The closest they came to scoring was from a powerful shot by Chris McQuade which Grant Hay did well to tip over the crossbar.

Half Time – Rossvale 0 Maryhill 0

The pace of the game picked up a bit in the second half, with playing swinging constantly from end to end, and both sides playing with more conviction than in the first half. A good move involving Michael Hardie, the most impressive player on the park, and Jason McKay, ended with the latter’s shot being well saved by Grant Hay. William Wells then came close for Hill when his close range shot struck the keeper’s right hand post. Wells had another great chance to score when sent clear by a precise pass from Justin Begg, but he delayed his shot just long enough to allow the keeper to block it. Another good effort from McKay almost gave Rossvale the lead, then at the other end Andy Monaghan’s goal bound header was flicked on by Joe Beckley, but struck a home defender and was cleared. It was looking like a no scoring draw was destined to be the outcome, which would have been a fair reflection of the play, but with ninety seconds remaining Rossvale got the break which saw them take all three points. Jason McKay’s shot did not look too threatening, but it appeared to take a deflection off a Maryhill defender, and was diverted just beyond the reach of Grant Hay and landed in the net.

Maryhill will feel that they deserved to take a point in a game between two well-matched teams, but to win a league title you need a bit of good fortune now and again, and Rossvale got that with their late goal which saw them consolidate their position at the top of the table.
