Hurlford Utd v Pollok - Kirstalls Run!

On Saturday 19th September, my daughter, Kirsty, and her friend Emilia, ran the Scottish Half Marathon in Edinburgh on behalf of Ronald McDonald House, Yorkhill. They completed the 13.1 miles in 2h 33m.The club (Hurlford) have kindly given me permission to collect donations on Kirsty's behalf at the home match with Pollok on Saturday, 26th September.

There will be a bucket at the gate, and my son Hamish and I will take it around the crowd at half-time.

This post is intended to let fans attending the match know why the bucket is there.

Kirsty ran for RMcDH, as when Hamish was four days old, he was diagnosed with a hole in his heart. This resulted in a particularly stressful ten months for us which culminated in successful, life-saving, open heart surgery and he's now fine. When he went thru his OP, he spent eleven days in the Royal Children's Hospital at Yorkhill and we were provided with accommodation by Ronald McDonald House. RMcDH is a fantastic facility which provides private rooms and common cooking and eating areas for parents who need to be near their kids in the Royal Children's Hospital.

Kirsty was originally going to run for the hospital charity, to thank them for saving her brother's life, but my wife and I asked her to consider running on behalf of RMcDH as they provide a vital service that you don't realise is required until you need it yourself. Not only does it avoid worried parents running up expensive hotel bills, but the kitchen facilities remove the reliance on restaurants; thus allowing families to eat together within their means and avoid being surrounded by people in restaurants enjoying themselves.

While H was in Yorkhill, we met a young mother with a young kid and a baby in tow - Anna from Dumfries. Her eldest daughter was in the hospital with meningitis. We regularly saw Anna and her kids in the hospital and in the RMcDH communal areas during our stay and we exchanged updates on our patients. If RMcDH wasn't there, Anna openly admitted that she didn't know how she would cope - as a hotel or B&B for several weeks wasn't financially possible for her.

On our last day at the hospital, we went to the canteen for a cup of tea while we were waiting on H's discharge papers. Anna and her husband were there. We had never seen her without her two youngest before. She smiled when we told her we were taking Hamish home - and we cried when she told us that they had just come from saying goodbye to their daughter as her life support had been switched off.

Ronald McDonald House enabled Anna to be at her child's side every day for the last three weeks of her short life.

Kirsty's Just Giving page is "Kirstallsrun" and the money collected at the match will be used to supplement that.

Good luck with this.We will all be very pleased to donate tomorrow.Football is a sideshow compared to the bigger issues in life.

Too true. In my experience though despite the banter and worse that sometimes goes on here the Junior Community are very supportive. I've already had a PM from a Glenafton fan asking about the Just Giving page details.

See you this afternoon.

Collected £282 at the match today. My daughter has asked me to pass on a huge thank you to everyone. So THANKS.

I'd like to add a special thank you to Wilma who sells the half time draw tickets at Newlandsfield. She accompanied me and my son with our bucket thru the Pollok fans and browbeat them into digging deep. They did. Thanks. THANKS. Thanks.

When today's collection is added to my daughter's sponsor money she will have raised nearly a grand for Ronald McDonald House.
