I think we're in danger of going up our own arse with the 'he's the best option' thing.

agreed he's probably the technically best forward, but in terms of effectiveness we get a fairly paltry return from him.

fair enough if he was winning every header and making a right pest of himself, but at best we get one or two slick through passes from him per game.... Unfortunately usually with nobody decent enough to capitalise (anya vs Germany aside)

Was just reading this and looked at the picture you have of Kenny Miller , a player of half his work rate would do us just now .

There was a clamour for Fletcher to play when he was doing fairly well in the Premiership. This was a few years ago.

He has been pish the last season and so it's no surprise he isn't offering anything for Scotland either.

miller's Scotland career caught fire with that goal vs Italy. We need another forward to come, er... forward in the same fashion, whether it's as a pest - type striker (miller, Naismith, Griffiths, McCormack ), or a more languid but clinical type (martin, rhodes).

methinks we won't see a Scotland player into double figures with goals for a good few years

He broke the offside trap 40 yards out and his first thought is to pass it wide (and out of play). 20 goals in about 3 years says it all. If you play a striker but expect the midfielders to score all the goals - there is your problem.

I struggle to see what he does. He doesn't win headers, he rarely manages to get hold of the ball to keep possession (something at least Miller managed), doesn't really trouble defenders, doesn't chase down the ball and doesn't score.

He must play better for Sunderland to keep getting picked but honestly, and he might be technically good but we need someone who can fit into the team better and contribute more, or something at least. Is Shaun Maloney our current top scorer?
