Queen's Park v Dumbarton

Recommended Posts

Welcome to Sons fans for what's a rare fixture these days. Nine years since our last league games and nineteen since our last knock-out, decided on penalties. Fair to say recent history reports on happier times on the park for Dumbarton.

We've had a sluggish start but improving quickly and this game will be a measure for Gus who's still shaping a group that's 50% newbies. How about Dumbarton - are you ready for a decent cup run?

Saw the pricing query. If the club have specials they normally announce on the home page so it's most likely the normal match prices, see link below. Not quite a tenner but cheaper than you'll be used to. You'll get a well-priced pint at the Members Club in the McAlpine Pavillion located at Lesser Hampden. Club souvenir stand is within the main stadium as you walk in. No printed programmes but there's an online version on the OS. Parking is free.

QP fans should be out in force after tonking Clyde yesterday. Hopefully, we'll make it a decent game.

Same team that started Vs. St Mirren, Hopefully take a decent grip of the game and maybe get some game time out of Waters,Lindsay & Kirkpatrick. Maybe even Miller.

Fantastic start from Dumbarton this season. Realistically, we'll just be looking to compete and put in a decent performance and maybe hope that they pull a dreadful performance out of nowhere. Both sides have more important games to worry about and will probably make a few changes each. Also, Darren Miller will score.

I think we might see Ewings, Graham, Waters, Lindsay, Miller, Kirky and Smith getting a run out here - hopefully The Don as well

Sounds disrespectful to Queen's Park by not playing our strongest team - but bringing these guys in wouldn't significantly weaken us

With the exception of Miller and Smith you could make a case that any of them could be starting in the first team

This could go either way, I'm hoping it's not another extra time and penalty job. I think it'd be totally disrespectful to Queen's Park to play anything but our strongest side.

On a side note this must be one of the oldest fixtures in world football?

I'd be resting some players for this one, our main focus should be the league and it's been a pretty hectic first few weeks of the season.

Miller, Graham, McCallum, Watters and possibly Ewings and Smith (could play McCallum out wide) to come in hopefully.

Would be nice to win but I wont be gutted if we don't. I'd much prefer the squad to be fresh for Saturday's game against QOS.

In all seriousness though I'd like to see a few other players get a chance, this isn't a dig at QP or anything but with the excellent start to the season a few boys haven't had much game time. Something like this maybe:

Brown

Taggart Graham Buchanan Waters

Miller Routledge Lindsay

Kirkpatrick Gibson

Smith

Cawley ran his heart out on Saturday, and I wouldn't be against resting him. Wouldn't risk Gaz as he'll be crucial for the QOS match and I'd like to see what Smith could do. Kirkpatrick, Lindsay, Waters and of course #666 haven't featured much and I reckon they could slot in without weakening us at all really.

Would be surprised if we did make that many changes however. Reckon it may be a very similar team to that which played on Saturday minus Craig and Barr.

Last time I was at Hampden I was picking up a league winners medal 8)

The last League Cup tie between the clubs at Hampden was in 1968 - resulting in a 1-0 win for the Spiders.

This was in the days of the 4 team section prelims - and in fact neither Queens Park nor Dumbarton advanced to the knock out rounds.

You have to go back a further two seasons to find Dumbarton's last League Cup win at Hampden - 3-0.

A repeat of that scoreline would be just great!

Heart says play the first team lads who haven't had a proper chance yet due to the results achieved by the current starting 11.

Head says play the current starting 11 to maintain momentum.

Looking at the signings you've brought in and what went out your second string would probably be good enough but if by some fluke it went our way I'd imagine your gaffer would be getting pelters all season for it. Your not going to win the league but a cup final (only 2 more games to win after this one) is an interesting prospect.

Not sure what Gus will do - still sorting out the new players and the league is definitely more important to us so I'd imagine he'll try a few things tomorrow which should make your passage even easier.

Given our horrific record in this cup I can't see Aitken taking pelters if even if we lose this by more than the odd goal. You are correct though in that it's our best chance of silverware and I hear Aitken feels the same so I'm not sure we'll see as much tinkering as we think/hope.
