Referees and playing advantage.

Recommended Posts

On Saturday afternoon me and my mates watched Rangers hand Hibs a doing in the comfort of our regular boozer.

1 thing that stood out for me was Collums use of playing advantage a lot.

Not often I praise him but he had a great game.

Once the game was over we made our way to the Falkirk stadium to watch a referee from the same training school as Collum do the exact opposite.

The guy just wasn't interested in letting the game flow at all.

Is this 1 rule refs are allowed to ignore at their own free will?

I can think of only 1 occasion at our game on Saturday where advantage was an obvious option. More annoyed by the booking for Watson where he was hauled back, and the 2 obvious corners missed.

In other words: a standard refereeing performance, nothing to get too worked up about.

God knows where some of you watched the game from but the folk around me shouted at least 4 times for the ref to just play on when he whistled for play to stop with us still having the ball.

I'd actually forgot about the penalty in the Hibs game so retract my praise for Collum.

Main stand, right beside FTV gantry.

And there was only one, where Bob McHugh picked up the ball and did that "grr I could have rounded their whole defence and scored there" classic reaction.

EDIT: I see the Sevconian has been banned; who was it? 8 or Chris/BP/AWRA?

Collum was woeful on Saturday. Sevco players were allowed to boot the shite out of Hibs players and he wouldn't book any of them. Thought our pen was soft too.

I've clearly not done a good job in the wording but when I praised Collum it was for his use of advantage.

To go from watching him to the chump we had was night and day.

I don't want to solely concentrate on our ref, it seems nowadays the refs can be either for advantage or against it.

Seems strange to me they can pick and choose which rules they like.

It's the referees interpretation. It shouldn't be but it seems to be. If the rules are in place then stick to them all the time, not when it suits.

So who's interpretation should it be then?

Any Falkirk fans gonnae tell me I imagined Mr Finnie yesterday not playing advantage at least 3 times?

It's really bad up here how they just want to whistle early.

I agree it really spoils the game, you can't get any flow with the constant stop start.

Particularly in the first half the ref was a real hindrance to both team yesterday. Slowed the already slow game down to a crawl.

In the Cup Final, Colum twice stopped play, when Falkirk had clear possession going forward in the Inverness half, to bring it back to give them a free kick for offside. Not suggesting a conspiracy, but was disappointed with his lack of advantage, when Falkirk were behind. He is allowed to decline the lino's offside flag and simply blew too quickly, without assessing their attacking opportunity.

As a referee I always try to play the advantage, especially when reffing youngsters games. The game gets it a bit hard for kids when there's constant stoppages. I had one boy screaming at me yesterday for playing the advantage instead of giving a foul, his team mate proceeded to glide past 3 players and lob the keeper - he went a bit quiet after that....

Any chance you could have a word with your more senior colleagues bud?

I'm a big fan of any ref who trys to let a game flow even if it's to the disadvantage of Falkirk

Haha I can try, I sometimes watch other games that are going on before mine's start and the decisions the ref's are making are poor. Unfortunately we can't see everything though so we are bound to miss things that maybe parents or fans on the sidelines can see
