Morton v Dumbarton - 25/7/15

Only realised a few days ago that the first completive game of the season was so close. Always look forward to the first one, but with our lack of activity in the transfer window and with Duffy keeping faith in most of the team the scraped over the line last season, I am not looking forward to this.

Not going to lie. Even with mixed expectations, I'm really looking forward to this. Competitive football in any way shape or form at this point is a blessing so I can't help feeling anything other than excited. Plus, I don't think this game is exactly out of our reach.

I'm also expecting an early exit from this competition. Elgin could take us to a replay in the League Cup - which could be followed by 3 straight defeats in our first League games. That's about the level of my confidence right now. We've got some quality in our team but a shaky defence and an attack reliant on a not fully fit ? Peaso. I hope the pessimism is unfounded - but we can only hope that other teams squads are as incomplete as ours if we've to have any chance in these games.

A replay in the league cup? Have the rules changed?

Apologies... I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't beat them over 90 minutes. I'm a monger of doom atm and I was imagining a trip up to Elgin somehow :(

Dumbarton's squad is pretty much complete, we're still needing improvement in every area of the park. Barring some unexpected signings this week, comfortable away win.

Not particularly although it is almost there.

Rumours are that Steven Craig has signed but there's no guarantee he'll be available for this, it looks like clearance is still needed and I'm not sure how quickly that will come through. If he is unavailable it leaves us pretty weak up front. I reckon after Craig is confirmed we'll be looking at a loan or 2 to bolster the squad.

No idea how this will go, really hard to judge players in pre-season games. Either way I'm thoroughly looking forward to some competitive football.

At least if we get humped it might be a sign to the owners that we need to invest in better players and management.

Which in turn will leave us with another shit manager who will sign more shit players.

I'm going to be ambitious and state that we might go even further than a single shot on target, and actually register a goal in this match. We're not very good though, so I can see another basic defensive mistake cancelling that out.

1-1, after extra time and decided by penalties IMO.

We're looking pretty attack focused under Aitken, albeit without a proper finisher up top to stick away the various chances we create. Pretty optimistic we'll go through. At least we won't have to put up with last season's pish attempts at defensive football which succeeded only in blunting our attack, not in making us defensively rigid. New man seems to have us looking more like Murray's team of 13/14 who had the "you score 3, we'll score 4" attitude, but with better defenders and a better 'keeper now.

Trying to muster some form of enthusiasm for this on Saturday. Duffy has done absolutely nothing worth raving about since the end of last season and our team isn't anywhere near Championship level. Quite frightening, really.

We appear to have assembled a decent side, certainly one which should be vigorously competing for the victory here.

But bearing in mind our record in this competition (surely one of Scottish football's more peculiar quirks) it wouldn't surprise me at all to see us kicking our heels when Round 2 comes around.

Dumbarton 9/5 seems like free money.

I've never seen us fans, as a collective, being so negative going into a new season.

Even 2 years ago, we pumped the skunks and had a couple of promising signings like imrie etc so while it wasn't great, it was nowhere near as bad as this.

If Duffy is still in a Job come Christmas, it will be a miracle.

Cappielow has never really been a happy hunting ground for son's, so I'm expecting a difficult away day, I'm always nervous against Morton, we did look good against hearts but not so much against clydebank, but if Craig is available, I'll hope for a win, tight, 1-2 or 2-3 hopefully
