Squad Numbers

Recommended Posts

I see on the Clyde website that they are using squad numbers for the coming season. Is there any other clubs out with the top 2 tiers using squad numbers that you know of. Wasn't sure if it was an SPFL directive or not.

I was thinking that's maybe why we've changed from Puma to Macron if the Macron gear is cheaper as we would have to pay for a new kit for every loan player we bring in. Less likely, but could also explain why we have been signing more players, earlier in the close season this year.

Unnecessary cost to clubs at this level really. Most clubs at this level have their strips numbered 1-18 or whatever and the players will use the selected match day squad number. At this level having players on short term deals/loans/trials and having to assign a shirt with the name printed etc will just add to the cost. Might not sound much, but clubs at this level need all the money they can get.

East Fife just use designated numbers, dont have their names on the shirt. I think Falkirk done the same when squad numbers were first brought in in the championship. Not sure whether we will put the players name on our shirts or not but obviously names on shirts arent compulsary if you decide to have squad numbers

Falkirk, Dumbarton and QOS just had designated numbers in the 1st championship as there was a leeway as it was introduced just a few weeks ahead of the start of the season. From last season you had to have players names on the shirts along with the designated number.

Does that mean EF didn't always start games with 1-11 on the pitch last season then?

Please keep some tradition and dignity in our game. Retain the 1-11 numbering in the bottom two divisions and leave this squad number gimmickry to the Prem and First Divisions. If anyone must have them, let it be them as unlikely to ever watch any games in the top two leagues.

Correct. This is the team line ups from one of our meetings.

Yup and it was bloody stupid. We had the previous season's change kit, probably because we couldn't afford an Under Armour one, which just had normal numbers, so the squad numbers weren't used in those games. Some numbers were used by 2 or 3 different players as the season went on and transfers and loans happened, a couple of times we had someone change number so that someone else could wear their one.

Couldn't be expensive for East Fife to put the players names on the shirt. How much would it cost to print Shite on every one?

We didnt even have designated numbers. We just operated with the normal 1-17 (& added 18 & 19 when they changed the rules to have 7 subs. As you say, Falkirk, Dumbarton and Morton designated numbers but didnt have names but it is now compulsory to have both in the Championship.

For some reason I thought you had designated numbers SD.

No we had already sorted the kit so it wasnt changed. In fact the switch to 7 subs on the eve of the first game was so late that we didnt have numbered kit for 18 & 19 on the opening day. Instead they both had blank shirts and we agreed with the ref that in the event of both being used the second one on would take another sub's numbered shirt as he wasnt going to allow two unnumbered shirts on the pitch at the same time.

Why do some fans still keep referring to leagues which no longer exist? It is Premiership, Championship, League 1 and League 2.

There is no first division.
