Steven Fletcher

Utterly pish, as he always is for Scotland against anything better than a pub side.

For a team that looks to put a lot of crosses into the box he is absolutely w**k at getting on the end of them. He doesn't have the ability to to make his own chances, can't hold the ball up and certainly lacks the ability for a McFadden esque moment of magic.

We either need to go with a #9 that's genuinely good at winning high balls, although I don't think 4-2-3-1 is even compatible with a crossing game, or my preferred option would be to bring another ball player in behind the front man and push Naismith up top.

He won us countless balls/free kicks from long balls today. In other games his flick ons and set up play has been class.

Should he have scored more goals in a scotland shirt? Aye. But he is up there with our best performers in this campaign so far. Only an idiot can't see that

Agree with OP to an extent. SF is technically good but fails to dominate opposition defences or conjure chances out of limited space. I'd always have him in the squad and starting most games, but I'd play him off/behind another , more goal-hungry striker. Fletch seems far more comfortable dropping back and helping to create.

Scotland fans happy with a striker who works hard, wins free kicks, but never scores goals.

Its Kenny Miller all over again.

We should start with Rhodes and Martin IMO. And then we'll score more.

I would listen to an argument that Naismith could play up front instead of Fletcher, I wouldn't agree it but at least it wouldn't be a moronic suggestion like playing Rhodes as a lone striker.

Fletcher is by far and away the best option, out of all out strikers he's the best at holding the ball up, the best in the air, has the best touch and given the chances the best finisher. The reason his goals return doesn't reflect the last point is that as we saw today he has to come really deep to get involved and help the team get up the park so rarely actually gets chances himself. The number of goals he scores is irrelevant, what matters is the number of goals he helps the team score. If he hung around the penalty box more he might get a few more goals, but then the likes of Maloney, Anya and Naismith would get far less.

A midtable English Championship striker is the answer to our goal scoring problems, so it is.

Pretty much this. Its amazing how many Scotland fans think the better players hang around at a lower level than "shite" players spend their career at.

Would that be a bad thing if our number 9 scored more goals instead of those behind scraping desperate chances into the net? It's not as if Anya, Maloney or Naismith have stunning scoring records thanks to fletcher sacrificing chances if his own. Put simply, we are grim at goalscoring.

Goals aren't important when you're looking for a striker. Plus, he managed to put away three of approximately 800 chances against the worst team in Europe, so that's a specious argument anyway.

How am I doing?
