Still More Good News on Crowds ... (outside Glasgow)

Recommended Posts

More healthy news on average attendances, with crowd figures for the season now available. (Table with figures is below).

In the Premiership there was growth at Aberdeen who broke through the 13k barrier... Dundee United who broke the 8k barrier... and Dundee, who came within a hairs-breadth of 7k. St Johnstone also did very well to leap from 3,800 to 4,600. Hamilton set a new ground record and you have to applaud the fact they actually doubled their attendance from last season's Championship... with 5 people to spare!! Inverness arrested several years of decline with a modest increase.

Huge credit must go to Hearts - who despite relegation saw their crowds rise to almost exceed 16k. Proof that success attracts supporters. No surprise that relegated and inconsistent Hibs fell away by almost 10%, albeit averages at ER did remain over 10,000. Championship clubs like Falkirk and Queen of the South also saw big rises due to the presence of the 'Big 3' and the playoff chase.

Unsurprisingly there were drops of a couple of hundred at Ross County and Kilmarnock as they battled but eventually avoided relegation.

Biggest falls came at the Old Firm with Celtic down 5% and Rangers plunging 23%. Motherwell also fell heavily, not surprising given they went from finishing 2nd to finishing 2nd bottom, and Partick suffered the usual "second season slump" together with bad luck with Celtic games. No surprise that St Mirren saw a heavy decline in patronage as they finished rock bottom.

Lastly the demise of Dunfermline - who I include as they played in the top tier 3yrs ago - continues with them now dropping well under 3,000.

So it would seem that if Armageddon, Nuclear Winter, and Slow Lingering Death have come to pass at all, they have not go much further than the boundaries of Glasgow.

Worth saying before anyone starts - we all know that the published crowds from Parkhead and Ibrox are "tickets sold" rather than "people present". So therefore not a reflection of how many fans are actually in the ground. However for the purpose of this exercise - comparing movement up or down, for each club, from season to season - this is not a problem as (AFAIA) neither club has changed their reporting method during this period.

Also, as with previous threads, figures in italics are for tier 2 and figures in italics and underlined are for tiers 3 & 4.

One of the main factors,I think, in the drop in Partick Thistle attendances was the fact that last season we had Celtic,Hearts,Aberdeen,Hibs and Dundee Utd visiting twice as opposed to just once this season Maybe some of the other clubs who have seen an increase had the reverse effect ?

Some fuds in the media will still try and put a negative spin on this, and demand Motherwell forfeit this weeks ties and allow Rangers to make their debut in the top division.

I imagine we'll have a similar figure next season.

Surely Aberdeen's numbers should be higher given the league campaign they've had?

8th highest average crowd in Scotland and we finished 17th. Lots of morons in the Falkirk support will tell you we're punching our weight.

More of a reflection on the size of the travelling supports from Hearts, Hibs and Sevco rather than Falkirk's support.

In the top flight you've got Celtic and Aberdeen whose away supports are just about equivalent to Rangers and Hearts respectively. Hibs I will give you, but then there's Dundee/Dundee United where our fourth biggest visiting supporting would be Raith. There's no Cowdenbeath/Alloa/Dumbarton in the top flight either.

I don't completely disagree with the gist of your point btw, but putting it all on away supporters is an over simplification and is not entirely accurate IMO.

We've a strange demographic to our fanbase. A lot of fickle stayaways who won't return for some bizarre reason. Being 23, this is the best I've witnessed on the park and cannot understand why some folk still barely ever turn out.

Large rural contingent to our support who won't travel in for smaller teams during the winter or games in midweek/stupid lunchtimes. Plus if the truth be told, our pricing is pretty high. The large English settler population brought up here with the oil generally doesn't bother with the club either.

Would hope for more but there we go. It is on the rise and that's the main thing!
