Replacing the hard disc in a laptop

Recommended Posts

The hard disc on my HP pavilion, has just packed in. The laptop wont boot up at all. I'm pretty confident of being able to replace it myself, but was wanting to know if anyone had any advice on what hard disc to buy.

My current one is 500gb, and I only really use my laptop for microsoft office, watching videos, and general internet. So I don't think I need anything too big.

Also, I don't have a recovery disc, so does anyone know what would be the easiest way of getting Windows installed on the new disc?

Cheers

As for recovery, you'll have to buy, or, ahem, "source", another copy of Windows. You can find Windows 7 for about £30 (genuine), or XP for less than £15 on Amazon.

Replacement HDD should cost around thirty quid as well, although you might benefit from a Solid State Drive instead - still less than a ton for a decent size one.

Does your laptop have one of the Microsoft Product key stickers on it? Or do you have a note of it anywhere? Schoolboy error if you don't. If you do then you won't need to pay for Windows again, just get a lend of a Windows 7 disc from a friend and fire in the product key when it asks you to activate.

You can also make your own recovery media from this link here - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery

If you haven't already bought another HDD you might want to buy one that spins at 7,200rpm and works faster than a 5,400rpm HDD in loading up and shutting down. Although an SSD will certainly work way faster than a 7,200rpm HDD it's still another option to consider if budget is key.

If you have went the SSD route it is most cautious to do some research first just in case you end up with a cheaper SSD but more expensive than a 7,200 HDD that doesn't actually work any better than a HDD. There are a lot of them out there, I went for a Samsung 840 EVO SSD because it is one of the best on the market and it's effing quick. A 128GB Samsung EVO looks about right for what you need imo.

Other options are if the HDD is salvageable ,

Just in case there is a slight chance it's just a registry error on your current HDD stopping your laptop from booting up you can remove the HHD and connect by USB adaptor to any other working computer as a logical drive and do a "registry scan" on it to find and repair registry errors. During the scan it will show up if there are errors and it will repair them and the Laptop should boot up straight away. I have repaired a few laptops this way, the problem came from the laptop not being able to shut down properly usually because the battery was almost dead and wouldn't hold a charge but the main socket power plug was switched off before powering down. This option will also confirm if the HDD really is fucked.

If you can get to the operating system loading but hanging all the time, do a clean OS install factory reset if you can from the boot menu. Most laptops have their OS install software in a hidden partition in OEM form and can be used to repair a corrupt OS. This also confirms if the HDD is fucked.
