A restructured 12 team league

Recommended Posts

In recent weeks we’ve heard suggestions to revert back to a 10 team top flight, which is still remembered for it’s repetition; or move to a 16 team setup which has attracted criticism for it’s lack of fixtures (only 30 games), it’s stagnation of competitiveness for mid-table sides, and the weakness of any second tier below it.

Keen to hear the thoughts of punters on the suggestion of a re-worked 12 team setup - http://scottishfootballrestructure.wordpress.com

The players would never go for this. Season running from early June to mid May and all they get is a couple of months off in the freezing cold months. Awful.

The only way summer football would work would be an Apertura/Clausura type setup with the Apertura running February to June and the Clausura from August to November

Let's restructure every season so nobody has a fuckin clue what is going on. Get it to the point where tv pundits don't know what the leagues are called and sponsors have no idea what they might be sponsoring. A new format every two minutes means you can spend a fortune marketing and re-branding all the time with loads of money thrown at snazzy new badges and swanky job titles for the blazers.

Leave it the f**k alone for fuxxakes!

It annoys me we always look at the league structure to try and solve Scotland's footballing problems, when IMO (apart from the fact the SPL team who is currently 7th has more points than 6th but is still below them, idiotic notion) there is nothing wrong with how it is at the moment ...

The real problem is we have no grass roots football in place to further develop future talent in this country, and when we do, Celtic and the club previously known as Rangers would just buy them and waste them (in saying that, Celtic are certainly due credit this season with GMS/Armstrong/Griffithes thanks to Ronny actually wanting Scottish talent as of late) ...

We need a system in place that starts with players at a much younger age to help promote them through a journey into the first team of a squad, ensuring their development is not stagnated by sitting on a bench to foreign "diddies" such as Pukki/Balde/Tonev etc, thus in turn helping weaker teams become stronger through their own doing and getting away from this "1 team Premiership" ...

As long as Celtic walk the Premiership (at no fault of their own), the Scottish game will be boring no matter if its 10/12/16/20 team league set ups !

The set up we have now is not too bad and overall I think it has been a change for the good - the Premiership play off format is a vast improvement from 1 up 1 down and the cash distribution among the Leagues has improved. The 'pyramid' play off too has been a progressive step. The compulsory full time idea above is just cloud cuckoo land - and any move away from a meritocracy is to be guarded against as that was one of the real disasters visited on us by the SPL. The fact that the 7th team can have more points than the 6th team is comparing apples with oranges - the 7th team is playing the 5 worst teams in the League to get its points while the sixth is playing the 5 best. Summer football is the sort of thing you try if you are just accepting you are third rate - Ronnie Delia got it right - Aberdeen and the rest will never win a title if they just accept they cant compete with Celtic. Did Clough at Derby and Forest just accept they couldn't expect to compete with Leeds, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd, or Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern etc in Eurpoe?

I dont think we have enough decent clubs to sustain a bigger league in that the league below would suffer.

The only thing Id change is the play off place, where the 2nd bottom SPL team play 4th like it happens in the rest of the leagues. The potential of six games to achieve promotion for the 3rd and 4th teams in 21 days is nothing short of a joke.

As it stands the now, the SPL is the league that needs a fix, the rest of the leagues are ticking away nicely until the fandans get involved with late late changes, the same ones who fecked the top league in the first place

Suppose a larger top tier could be workable with teams like qots, Falkirk, hib capable of competing in the top tier but any changes would have to be a few years down the line.

The league structure is not the problem. It is the cost of watching games that is the turn off. In Germany which.has a far higher level of football it.is.much.cheaper to watch.games.reduce prices and they will.come. also get rid of the clowns at the top.of the sfa and Bring in somebody competent.
