Albino Rover
After going through the ‘80s and ’90s with Christophe and Ludo, time to take a cinematic step into the 3rd millennium A.D. The last two decade threads produced clear and quite predictable winners, so I've decided to make this poll a little bit different: you have 15 years of film to choose from, so I'm hoping that a mix of modern classics and recent releases might make the competition a bit tighter. My previous attempts at these polls proved slower than anticipated, so in the interest of keeping you free from mass suspense I've gone for a lower number of places. If this causes public unrest I'll happily begin the countdown from 40- but only the top 21 will get a proper write-up. Most of you know the drill by now but here's a reminder of how it works: Send me a PM on here with your top 10 films whose original release was after 31st December 1999. If any of your films were released in the 20th (or 19th) century I’ll try and let you know. Don't send any more or fewer than 10. Top spot gets 10 points and bottom gets 1 and everything in between works the same way. The title of your PM should tell me what's in it. I will take entries for the entire month of April. After midnight on the 30th, the next time I log in I'll post on here to close voting. Anything after that won't be counted. Please, please, please, no tactical voting. Don't vote for something because everyone's talking about it, or because you think everyone else will or won’t vote for it- this isn’t a FPTP election. It doesn't matter whether you're going the "best" or "favourite" route, vote however you see appropriate. I encourage you all to include your own reviews or reasons why you chose them; I'll be doing write-ups for each film and for those your input is important. Make sure you number your nominees, number 1 being your favourite. If you send me a list and you don't make it clear what the scores are, then your vote won't be counted. I think that clears everything up but if there are any queries or questions let me know. THE LIST 21. In The Loop 20. Django Unchained 19. Catch Me If You Can 18. Amelie 17. Birdman 16. The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers 15. Gladiator 14. The Prestige 13. Donnie Darko 12. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring 11. Inception 10. The Lives Of Others 9. Oldboy 8. Pan's Labyrinth 7. City Of God 6. The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King 5. There Will Be Blood 4. The Wolf Of Wall Street 3. No Country For Old Men 2. The Dark Knight 1. The Departed
Ira Gaines
This is going to be a bit more annoying for me as there's so many standards for the 00s that I haven't seen, and don't plan on seeing either. Can we go by the IMDB years for this, rather than release dates? Much less need for getting the memory right.
yoda
I actually had a list made up for "Top 10 Films of the 00s". Now I've got to re-do the entire list to take into account 2010-2015. Cheers AR, this isn't going to be easy.
Ira Gaines
Btw, 10 movies from 15 years? Really? Not even a movie a year to put on the list.
Albino Rover
All fair points, I'm glad of the feedback. I'll stick by the "release dates" ruling, to keep order with my sibling threads, but IMDb seems like an ideal guideline- it's usually right. If I find any discrepancies I'll try to let you know. I had thought about increasing the nominations to 15 films but for some reason it didn't seem right with only 21 official places up for grabs. Would a film a year be fairer? Ira Gaines
I think 15 places would be better for yourself to be honest. I always say that more places means less room for ties. I think I could put a 10 together quite handily from the timeframe. With 21 places available, the ties would be even LESS prominent with that number of nominations because a lot of ties tend to happen nearer the bottom. The only big problem with that is a film can pick up 15 points out of nowhere and push it ahead on a list that doesn't feature any of the other contenders. In THAT respect, 10 would be better. Ira Gaines
I've put too much thought into that.
Albino Rover
Like the top 25 directors thread, in the event of ties on points placing will go down to number of votes, then #1 picks, then #2, #3, etc.
Ira Gaines
Fair enough. The great thing about IMDB is that it allows me to knock together a list like this in no time, because of all of the different ways you can search. It's a godsend for quick searches. Then the way I put the final list together basically ensures I can be happy with it. Already got a pretty decent shortlist that I'm extremely comfortable with. Just need to put it all together which COULD be time consuming, but not overly so. Should have a list out before the clock strikes midnight. EDIT: Unless IMDB decides to fall to shit on you. Slacker
I've got it down to around 25. Normally for these things I know my #1, #2 and #3 straight away but I'm really struggling to get these films in any sort of order...
Kyle
This is the most difficult one for me by a mile. Where do you even start here?
Co.Down Hibee
I would say the quality of films in the 90s was greater than the 21st century(so far), A lot of blockbuster films now are far too reliant on CGI ,still some great ones though.
Kyle
Question - will you be considering separate movies in trilogies, or the trilogy as a whole - ie the Batman Trilogy, American Pie etc? I'm finding it incredibly difficult to separate a few and that would potentially create more space.
Ira Gaines
Obviously it's separate movies.
Co.Down Hibee
Comedies haven't been great, struggling to think of a really good one this century....animation has been excellent at times, shrek,The Incredibles,Up and Finding Nemo will all get a mention I'm sure. Ira Gaines
The Wolf of Wall Street was a comedy for me. And as such, was the best comedy ever.
