Killie vs Motherwell

Recommended Posts

Now that the national teams matches are out the way. This is probably Killie's best chance of three points out their pre split matches as they try for top 6.

For us we've been the better team in each of our last 4 matches which isn't something we've been able to say much, well all season really. We've certainly improved and I'd fancy our chances but our record on plastic pitches is atrocious.

2-2 draw

'probably killie's best chance of points pre split' well considering the other 2 games are at home to Aberdeen and away to celtic, I'm pretty sure it's a definite.

This is a must win game. Last game at Rugby Park we played them off the park, but they've improved recently so hopefully the Locke train rolls on.

It was interesting to hear ex St Mirren and Motherwell footballer Brian Martin talk about artificial pitches on the MFC Fan Podcast. He said that there is an advantage for teams who train and play on these surfaces, however, he did mention that when the surface is wet it makes for a much better game (Here’s hoping it’s pissing down with rain).

I'm not sure that any advantage gained by using the synthetic surface is really as pronounced as people make it out to be. Motherwell will likely train once or twice on a similar surface this week, and whilst Killie players will know the bounce etc of the park, that's really no different to 'well knowing how to play on their poor quality surface. I can't imagine that any Motherwell players, if they were to be honest, that would prefer to play on that Fir Park pitch to a smooth surface that makes for good football.

As for the game itself, there's no excuses for not winning this. Motherwell are on a good run, but so were we until Dingwall. We're a better team and should make that count. However, football rarely works like that and I wouldn't be surprised if for the second matchday in a row we did our bit for the smooth running of the St Mirren relegation express.

2-1 Killie, but the reverse of that wouldn't shock me.

Not sure Killie are really a good enough side for you to suggest that there's no excuse for not beating us.

Let's face it your a below average side in a pretty poor league, Motherwell will fancy their chances here and rightly so.

Agreed.

It's just that you are a even lower than below average in a shite league.

The two teams played each other just a couple of weeks ago and it was a close game (even if we were better playing against 11 than 10) - and I would guess our form over the past few games will be very similar - so it will likely be a close game again and both teams will fancy it. From a 'Well point of view, if guys like Pearson, Johnson and McDonald keep up the good form, we've got every chance of taking something.

The most interesting one for me will be Ainsworth - can he take what he did against Accies and build on it or will be revert to form? If he can finish the season strongly (as a guy playing for a contract/move should do), we've got a real asset on our hands. The other one is Erwin vs Sutton - is it worth playing someone who can press the Killie back line and offer something outside the box or do we play someone who can actually score and assume that the service from wings makes it worthwhile...

I'd like to hear no discussion of the pitch from Barraclough or the players whatsoever in the build up - it'll be better than playing on our pitch in it's current state - so they should make the most of it given that we are playing some decent stuff on the deck at the moment..

Our only realistic chance of three points before the split, imho, but I reckon a scoring draw. Given recent performances by both sides, could be a cracker. The artificial turf is only going to help the playing of decent football.

2-2.

Let's be honest though, the only thing keeping this pretty poor Killie side above water this year is your two month purple patch at the start of the season where you picked up the majority of your points before teams quickly sussed you out.

From the end of October onwards you've been every bit as bad as we have this season, there's not exactly a great deal to suggest Killie are currently a better team than Motherwell other than points you picked up over 5 months ago.

Which is why I was quite surprised by QLP's rather dismissive attitude towards us as a supposedly inferior side that Killie should be beating.

St. Mirren at home to Celtic. Partick away to Aberdeen. Ross County are at Tannadice.

If Motherwell could grab three points here, it could be a huge weekend for us. Here's hoping Lionel fancies it again, as a front four of Johnson, Erwin, Ainsworth and McDonald (with Sutton available from the bench) could do some damage.

Away win here. Neigh bother.

Kilmarnock 1-4 Motherwell (McDonald x2, Ainsworth and the sub Sutton).
