the cynic in me also sees tht the facennas' can also kick ashfield out of their home like clyde at shawfield. what could happen is simalar to what happens at cowdenbeath where the stock car racing heavily subsidises the football. They get minimum crowds of 1k for the stockies yet the football is barely in the hundreds. Now for speedway at ashfield if they market it well and attract crowds of 1-2k every meeting then for a size of the area in terms of catchment it should be do-able then the football should benefit. yes the ground is crying out for investment but the football will be able to use any upgraded facilities. the good thing is that the basis is there in terms of the seated stand and covered terrace

Its a myth that the football at Cowdenbeath is subsidised by the stock cars, they are 2 companies owned by the same people but are both independent from each other. Football pays its own way with what it brings in and in fact we now pay a rental to the stock car company.

As for our crowds being barely in the 100s our lowest crowd this season for a league game is 542 with the current average being 1645 (obviously inflated due to good crowds v Rangers, Hibs and Hearts).

I know what you mean about Ashfield though.

i stand corrected, i know at one time possibly in the mcdoogs days the stockies did subsidise the football

you have to agree if ashfield do the same level of marketing as racewall they will make a few bob. the ground at saracen is a good location being on several main bus routes also a 10 minute walk from the train. it is a case of making speedway an attractive family night out, friday night thunder anyone (okay needs devils candles for that). good food, bar and something for the weans to do and you are on a winner

Who owned the stadium before these guys bought it?

Actually not sure who owned the stadium before these guys bought it. Obviously wasn't ashfield if they were paying a rent.

Looks as though it could work out well for them, excellent talent in the area get a group of guys local or fairly local playing for their local team under a good set up and they are onto a winner as it will be easier to keep them.

A bit off topic but you seem to know about the racing side of things. I remember when i was really young a vague memory of going to watch the speedway at Shawfield, must have been about 25 plus years ago. Would this be right?

Its all changed since Gordon left. At the time when he ran both the football got a ground rental from the stock cars and the money from the bar and the outdoor market rental as well a Gordon putting his own money in. As I said earlier its all changed now and we pay a rent on the ground and have nothing to do with the bar and outdoor market.

I would agree about the speedway in Glasgow if it was marketed well they could get good crowds in, even better if they could get the Elite League and regular coverage on Sky.

I have watched it on the telly a few times and seen Poole Pirates a few times live when I have been down that way and they must get 2-3000 per meeting no reason why the guys at Glasgow shouldn't be looking to do the same with a bit investment.

I suppose there is also the spin off for Ashfield if the ground is done up a bit.

Glasgow Tigers used to race at Shawfield probably would have been in the 80s or 90s.

Glasgow tigers have home meetings on a sunday afternoon. As far as I know they can't have evening meetings because of a noise curfew which means no racing after 7pm.

Don't want to turn this into a speedway thread but when exactly is the speedway season ? I take it its the spring summer months ? Its a friday night is it not ? or is it a sunday? I take it it's not a saturday otherwise it would interfere with Ashfield F.C.

An upgrade of facilities , good local sponsor , rent free , seems like a win win for ashfield.

Back to the football , ashfield are certainties to go down this season but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Rebuild on and off the park from the lowest league in the region will be a good thing for them.

7pm ???...that's ridiculous ffs.

Think how much noise one boy racer on a motorbike or in a car makes whizzing by your house and multiple that by well a lot ! .

Would you like a speedway meeting next to your house?

hell yes, in fact i would love it if there was a full size race circuit next to my house as it would save me getting up at stupid o'clock to drive to knockhill, plus for 2 day meetings I could have a comfy bed and shower, okay i have that in my caravan but you get my point

No - one in their right mind would though.

Never remember speedway at Shawfield, it was always a dog track, even back in the 1950's when it used to be the venue for all the Central league cup finals. I remember being there three times in May/june 1954 for finals involving Kilsyth. Crowds of around 16,000 for each one; and yes, of course, we won them all!

Back on topic, the speedway was at White City, just across the road from Ibrox

I've just amended this post as White City was demolished in 70's so maybe shawfield did also host Speedway. I do remember that Glasagow Tigers moved to Blantyre and used the old dog track there. It was also demolished and Parks of Hamilton used the land as a bus park for their touring fleet.

Presumably the lack of floodlights precludes evening meetings as well?

EDIT: Apparently the Glasgow Tigers raced at:

http://www.glasgowtigers.co/?page_id=26

White City - 1929 to 1968 (with breaks)

Hampden - 1969 to 1972

Cliftonhill - 1973 to 1977

Blantyre (2 different venues) - 1977 to 1986

Workington - 1987

Shawfield - 1988 to 1998 (with 1 break)

Ashfield - 1999 onward

Just spoke to a mate of mine who is a big speedway fan. Apparently the season runs from late march until October.
