HAMPDEN chiefs are in late discussions with a number of potential sponsors looking to snap up a bargain with Old Firm League Cup.

SCOTTISH football is finally on the brink of landing a new sponsorship deal - on the back of a one off League Cup semi-final showdown between Celtic and Rangers.

Record Sport understands the SPFL are auctioning off a three-match package for the latter stages of the competition at a cut-price £50,000.

Hampden bosses are in advanced discussions with a number of potential bidders, all vying to have their brand attached to what will be the first Old Firm showdown in three years, on February 1.

As part of the package the other Hampden semi between Aberdeen and Dundee United will be sold off to the same buyer who will then also have the option of sponsoring the final on March 15.

The news will come as a timely boost to SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster who just last week was lampooned by sporting mogul Barry Hearn for his failure to tie up a commercial partner for Scotlands professional league.

Doncaster has been in detailed discussions with a number of companies who are ready to hand over their cash and its expected all rival bids will be put before the SPFL board, possibly as soon as this week, before a final decision is rubber-stamped and made public.

But the figures involved relatively small in the world of sport are sure to raise a few eyebrows. Sources close to the deal insist the SPFL have offered the package out a bargain rate to showcase what their product can do for a prospective client.

And with time a factor they want to reel in a partner hoping that next time, the deal will be more lucrative.

The games leaders have come under fire for failing to land a sponsor for the league and league cup competitons since the SPL and SFL merged in the summer of 2013.

They used to get £1,000,000 for the whole competition, so it surprises me that the Semi-Finals & Final... the highest profile matches, including OF and New Firm derbies, 2 on TV... would only generate 5%.

Juniors have sometimes struggled for sponsors in recent years and have sold their Junior Cup Final on a 'standalone' basis.

Cockwomble is worth every penny of his salary. Wonder what his salary is? Spot cream and hair gel won't buy themselves.

2 years to get a sponsor, gets the piddling amount of £100k for 3 games and you know fine well he'll have sold it entirely on the back of the Old Firm match. Its not even for next season.

Surely the chairmen of the clubs are seeing the embarrassingly inept work Doncaster does and thinking anyone else would do a better job.

Any ideas why it's "The Scottish League Cup presented by QTS" - and not just "the QTS Scottish League Cup" or even simply "the QTS Cup"? In England they have always done it that way with the FA Cup, but for reasons of tradition. We've happily had "the Coca Cola Cup", "the CIS Insurance Cup" and so on. I'm no market guru, but I'd imagine that naming it like that appears less rewarding to a sponsor.
