Wilky1878
Sky Sports are showing the story of gretna at half past 6 tonight. Could be quite an interesting programme.

weeredbook
Hopefully it will be ALL the story and includes all the debt and strife .Hope it shows the devastation that Mileson left behind and speaks to those who's companies were owed thousands .Also a bit of reality about how they conned and cheated their way up the ladder . Or will it be the rose tinted spectacle version ? .

cowdenbeath
Watched the programme came across as a rose tinted version of the story. Schoolboy error from the reporter saying that Gretna 2008 were formed as a junior side in the East of Scotland League. Edited to add Gavin Skelton was right they did look complete wankers turning up to 3rd division games in their designer suits
Cowden Cowboy
Fascinating though brought back lots of memories re a pretty obnoxious club. There they were on cup final day led out by a refugee from the White Heather Club. Poor old Rowan who never has been back through the Gretna turnstiles since he was deposed - some would say he couldn't get his head through them. Then there was Davie 'How Long' Irons, Brian Gilfillan scoring Cowden's winner at Raydale so then Gretna sign him. Dene Shields who was flying for us on the rightwing so they bought him as well – Cowden forcing them to shell out £30,000 on deadline day after they umpteen times said they wouldn’t increase their offer but increased it every few days. The enclosure roof blowing away, the wee yobs, the Social club, the newbie fans at Central Park celebrating their first title with pristine new scarves and flags. The great youth programme, 130 schools with free coaching, handing out roses, - great initiatives pity it was all done at somebody else’s expense and without a shred of humility. Paul Hartley getting sent off in the final. Ex-Cowden loanees in Robbie Neilson, Craig Gordon and Alan Main. Playing at Motherwell and getting gubbed by a Stephen Kenny side. A fairy tale paid for with someone else’s pot of gold. Hubris, Icarus and all the rest comes to mind.
cowdenbeath
I was surprised that 2 clubs actually gave the odious Alexander job interviews.

Big Berk
I was at the Gretna Derry City game. It was a freak result - Derry scored a 30 yard wonder goal with every shot in the second half, with Alan Main like a wheelie bin on his goal line. I think that lost them public and journalistic sympathy, and the football beaks' at Hampden enforcing them to play home games 70 odd miles away at Motherwell and the dath of Miles meant the end was inevitable. I well remember Gretna in the then First Division - they were far ahead of most of todays Championship, and would have been a match for Hearts and Rangers. Muzza81
Was a good away day - when you weren't getfing a brick over your head or the game doesn't get abandoned after 17 minutes. Vile club and glad to see the back of them. Manufactured pish. Tosh signed for them having turnws down Aberdeen due to the ££ said it all. That 8-0 scudding was about as hard to take as it gets. Still hurting I see. Not as bad as Cowden louts giving a Raith fan with learning difficulties a doing. I've often heard/read people sneering at Gretna because they had a sugar daddy. The same people dont seem to see that at clubs like Chelsea, Man City and the like, and I'm certain there would be no complaints if their own club got a big money benefactor. Yes because of spending other people's money not through any plucky fairy tale - the public sympathy they had was manufactured by the media and their own hype. Their attitude was dreadful - big heads and big time Charlies

Well yes but we wouldn't let our heads get as swelled as those at Raydale nor would we come out with crap like Alexander did as he insisted it wasn't money that brought their success but good old hard work (mainly his)

Their attitude was dreadful - big heads and big time Charlies No doubt the players revelled in the cash and driving around in the owner's flash cars. But gloating players wasnt just a Gretna thing, nearly all footballers are like that - self important, self deluded and arrogant. So, they were like that not because they were Gretna players but just your average footballers who briefly found themselves in clover.

Ah that old chestnut.Well even though your example was excruciatingly poor people do see them as the similar and despise them equally, what's your point? Or are you just making up points to make you look smart.
Waspy
I can remember playing against them pro-youth. They played in a sleepy wee village called Newcastleton, I can remember seeing a bronze plaque in the changing facilities saying they were built with money from hearts.
