Renting Apartments abroad

Good evening P&B,

I'm looking to book a city break somewhere in Europe next year. I've been looking at hotels where I'd like to stay and found the prices to be a bit of a minter, frankly. Apartments look a decent bet, though I've never done this before. I've had a look at AirBnb and Holidaylettings so far, and have heard hit and miss stories regarding the first. In my inexperienced naivety, the latter seems fairly reputable.

Does anyone on here tend to go for apartments rather than hotels when they go away? If so, any tips on who is best to book with or avoid?

Last summer I rented an apartment through Airbnb just off the Arc de Triomphe in

Paris. Prime location, pretty nice interior albeit small and only £400ish which for a week in Paris is really cheap. The woman who owned it was very nice, but there was a couple of problems. It didn't have air con so it was boiling hot 24/7 and there were works going on in the street so a couple of days there was no water between 8am and 6pm. However, she gave us 100 back for the inconvenience which I thought was fair.

Basically, it worked out really well for me, but if the owner had been difficult to deal with it could have been a bit of a nightmare.

You just need to be sure to read the reviews on airbnb. There are definitely some real gems on there, I stayed in a massive flat just around the corner from Haymarket station in Edinburgh back in August, which was an absolute bargain, and the place was excellent.

Used airbnb twice this year for apartments in Hamburg and Rio, both were great value. As mentioned above look at the reviews and owners replys, if they are all positive then would expect it to be decent and if the owner seems reasonable in replying on any negative points then you may at least have some justification or reassurances that they are one offs.

Like others have said, look at the reviews and make a judgement based on that. I have used airbnb for an apartment in Ghent for a few days and in Budapest for 6 weeks. Both had good reviews and both were excellent. I prefer staying in an apartment when I am away and have had nothing but good experiences.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ended up in an apartment in dusseldorf on September for the Scotland game. Booked through booking.com a week before we left and it was perfect. £45 a night and it slept the three of us so only £15 Each a night. Nobody we met could believe what we were paying when they told us how much they were paying for hotels and hotels
