I'm only going in the hope 'salute' comes through and starts windmilling through his own support.

mate i have no hassles with our support, only 2 idiots, been going over 35 years without anything but admiration for the clyde support, i will be there saturday , though i fear the worse. if we play like yesterday it could easily be a 3 or 4 loss

I think we really need to learn from the our last few games, and punt this diamond formation right into touch. It doesn’t work for a variety of reasons both defensively and attacking wise. Both of the early goals we lost against Albion and Queen’s Park came from the same issue – a complete lack of protection for the full back which is what happens when you don’t play anyone wide in midfield. We also saw McBride get absolutely no protection against Nairn in the cup, and in the first 45 minutes especially time and time again he had two men to deal with which resulted in one of them having 10 yards of space to eye up a ball into the box. I guess you could even argue the second Albion goal on Saturday came from a similar issue, but I think that was more down to a quick Albion counter attack than anything else.

Going forward, we simply can’t continue to play Bobby Linn through the middle. Bobby, in my opinion, is at his best when he picks the ball up just inside the opposition half, and see’s space in front of him which he can drive into. If he can see space in behind a full back, he has the pace and skill to beat them either on the outside or to cut inside and drive forward. If we play him through the middle, when he picks up the ball there is no space for him to drive into, just two defenders coming at him as soon as he receives a pass to feet.

I think the diamond formation originally came in as Dylan Carreiro simply can’t play in a traditional 4-4-2 formation. He is too attacking to play as a wide midfielder, as he offers no cover to the full back, and as a central midfield he is 100% attacking minded, and we can be cut open through the middle with just one defensive minded midfielder to pick up the pieces when our attack breaks down and the other team stride forward (see our lost goals at home to East Fife with Carreiro at MC for the evidence!). Based on the last few games, I’d go with Carreiro on the bench and start with a standard 4-4-2. Carreiro is obviously a very good player, but we can’t be changing what worked for 2 months solely to accommodate a loan player who will return to his parent club shortly.

One final thing I would mention is that last season, a lot of excuses were made for Banjo/ Hamilton whenever they had Alan Cook playing as the wide midfielder infront of them as he didn’t do his fair share of tracking back. Currently we have NO-ONE as a wide midfielder, therefore NO cover, NO tracking back, and our full backs are 100% exposed whenever the opposition are in control of the ball.

quote] did carreiro not come on at two nil down?it was definitely at least one nil when he came on, and the second goal came from McBride giving the ball away.

Carreiro was a direct replacement for Kieran Stewart. I think this and the Clyde game are the only two he has played as a proper MC in a 4-4-2? Against EF I have covered, but also against Clyde in the first 45 minutes we struggled to control the game in the centre of the pitch and conceded two goals. It was only when we had a lot more space after the sending off, and less to defend coming through the middle due to the man advantage that Carreiro was able to show his attacking worth.

If Carreiro can't work in a central midfield with a partner, and can't work out wide due to the lack of cover to the full back, where can he be played from the start in a 4-4-2 formation?
