Scotsman titles to merge with up to 45 job losses
Johnston Press announces flagship daily will share operations with Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News

The Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News are to merge operations with the loss of up to 45 jobs.

Parent company Johnston Press, which on Wednesday morning said that more cuts were on the way before the end of the year, moved swiftly delivering the news to staff at the Scottish titles the same afternoon.

The plan is to merge the operations of the three titles by March next year, with a reduction of between 35 and 45 roles expected.

The three titles will continue to retain their separate identities in print.

Johnston Press said that the operational merger of the Scottish titles mimics the model already successfully implemented at its Leeds-based titles the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post.

The restructure will see Ian Stewart, the editor of the Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday, take on the newly-created role of editorial director of immediate parent company The Scotsman Publications Ltd.

Frank O’Donnell, the editor of the Edinburgh Evening News, will take the title of managing editor.

“This one team model will enable our editorial team members to work across different titles, delivering quality content and reducing duplication of effort as a result,” said Stewart. “The measures being outlined – which include the opportunity for editorial team members to apply for voluntary redundancy – are proposals at this stage and there will be a full consultation period before final decisions are made.”

The publisher said that the decision followed a “detailed review of how to create one single editorial team to best serve the communities in the region whilst maintaining the identity of each title”.

The organisational review was conducted by Stewart, O’Donnell and Peter Charlton, the former editor of the Johnston Press-owned Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post.

Charlton left the publisher last year, 11 months after the company had merged the editorship of its two flagship Yorkshire titles.

He has since gone on to work as a consultant launching All Square Media with Andrew Vine, former assistant editor of the Yorkshire Post, in May.

Just another nail in the coffin. Clock is ticking....

Celebrating job losses is of course, very classy behaviour.

The newspaper's editorial coverage of the referendum was very poor, but that has very little to do with the majority of staff. There would have been plenty of Yes voters working there too. The entire industry is going to shit, and these job losses are inevitable as a result, but rejoicing at it is a bit much.

Can't say I share your glee for people losing their jobs. Do you think it is the people at the top that make the decisions on which political direction to go in that are getting punted here? I would guess that no it is probably those at the bottom of the pile that will be deemed surplus. Probably some of them voted yes.

Pretty poor taste imo

Stop talking shite. I've not celebrated any job losses.

People are not "celebrating job losses" you fucking roaster.

The story is about job losses and people on this thread are rejoicing. You said "It would be wonderful if this rag went belly up", which would result in hundreds of jobs going.

The first word of your post, in response to a story about job losses, was "Fantastic".

Fantastic that the Scotsman seems to be on a slippery sloap ? Absolutely. I also hope ATOS go out the game. Does that mean I'm hoping for the staff to lose their jobs? I also canny wait for Rangers to go tits up again, how terrible of me.

Take your feigned outrage somewhere else.

The folk who suffer when these things happen are those at the bottom of the chain who have no responsibility for decision making. The decision makers generally walk into another job no bother and don't suffer the consequences. I don't want the Scotsman to go out of business - I want it to lose the current Scottish cringe and be re-energised as a proper respectable newspaper.

And you're entitled to your opinion. I hope they go tits up along with the record and any of the rest of them.

Would you be unhappy to see Sevco go bust? Honest answer.

Sorry for not posting in over an hour, m8.

No, I wouldn't be particularly sad if Rangers went bust, but football is an entirely different situation given that the footballing staff would all find new clubs no problem. A new football club would obviously pop up to replace the old one, so there wouldn't probably be a huge net loss of jobs overall.

And if it did happen, I wouldn't create a thread specifically to gloat about staff losing their jobs.

Well yes there would, as the considerable backroom employees would be in no position to walk straight into a new job.

Not that this, of course, should stop any rejoicing at the demise of horrible institutions like certain football clubs, businesses and indeed shit newspapers like the above.

They are not the ones at the bottom of the food chain though. What about the poor tea ladies and kit men etc?
