SNP Deputy Leadership Contest

If there's another thread on this, my mistake! I just couldn't see one offhand.

The three candidates up for election are:

Keith Brown MSP for Clackmannanshire & Dunblane

Angela Constance MSP for Almond Valley

Stewart Hosie MP for Dundee East.

Can only see it being between Hosie and Brown personally. I'd prefer Hosie to Brown but neither are particularly great choices in my opinion.

Is Constance actually viewed as a serious contender by our resident SNP members in here? She comes across as a bit of a vacuum with nipples to be honest. She was only dragged to the frontline when it became clear to the SNP leadership that Salmond and Sturgeon were a massive turn off to women voters.

Constance could be popular among the new members, given that she's a fundamentalist Independence supporter whereas the other two are more from the gradualist approach.

Here is each candidate's introductory statement:

Stewart Hosie:

'On the 18th September thousands of Yes activists were knocking on the doors of Independence supporters throughout Scotland.

It was the culmination of the biggest political campaign Scotland has ever seen and the 45% Yes vote was delivered in spite of the entire might of the UK establishment being deployed against us.

No-one can deny the incredible enthusiasm and energy which the Yes campaign brought to Scotland, re-energising politics in every corner of our country.

I am certain if we are to ensure new powers are delivered for Scotland it will be vital to keep the energy of the Yes movement alive as we continue to campaign for those powers.

The next opportunity we have to do that is the 2015 General Election but that election should not be a re-run of the referendum.

Rather it is Scotland’s chance to hold Westminster’s ‘feet to the fire’ – ensuring that they keep their promise to deliver maximum devolution – and that means devolving everything apart from Defence and Foreign Affairs.

The best way to do that will be maintain the campaigning efforts we have seen over the last two years, to reach out to Yes and No voters alike who both want more powers, and send the largest ever number of SNP MPs to Westminster.

I believe I can play a leadership role in that campaign, and beyond, by helping to modernise the SNP where it is needed and building on the existing strengths of the Party where it is not. Not least because of my experience as a previous National Secretary when we started to modernise the party and my role as National Organiser when we rebuilt the grass roots campaigning capacity of the SNP.

That experience will be invaluable as we now all work together – new members and old - to win in 2015 and beyond.

I joined the SNP thirty one years ago, in 1983, to campaign for Scottish Independence.

I am standing for the post of Depute Leader so that experience can be used as we continue to campaign for Independence.

I hope I can count on your support.

Yours for Scotland

Stewart Hosie'

Angela Constance:

'The Independence referendum has changed Scotland forever. Since 19th September, 55,000 people have joined the SNP. Why have they done this if not to continue to campaign for Independence? If elected Depute Leader I will ensure that, as a party and a movement, we continue to make the case for Independence every waking day.

We cannot know when the next opportunity to create an Independent Scotland will arise, but it will arise and we must be ready. That need for readiness requires absolute focus through bad times and good. This is why I will not be seeking the office of Deputy First Minister if you elect me Depute Leader of the SNP.

My ambition is to build our party of mass membership into a party of mass participation. To do this, we must ensure that every member has an equal say in the governance of our party and an equal opportunity to be involved in what we do. Our branches are our strength and we need to support them to be at the heart of every community in Scotland.

The SNP must not retreat into the inward looking world of the old politics. This is no longer about politicians and parliaments, it is about people. It is about the people who voted Yes out of hope. But it is also about those who voted No because they feared the future.
The SNP no longer has a monopoly on the independence movement. We must develop a close working relationship with others who believe, with us, that Independence is the way to make Scotland a better country.

The task of the next Depute Leader of the SNP is to bring the talents of all our members and those of the wider Yes campaign together to take our movement forward to the point where our goal, Independence, becomes inevitable.

That is my task.

If elected, I shall commit to it head, heart and soul. Every waking day. '

Keith Brown:

'I want your number 1 vote so I can do a job that the party needs done.

We have to plan for the future now. In a few months the Westminster election will be over and we will be planning for the 2016 Holyrood election. We need a Depute Leader to help win that.

The Depute Leader is responsible for developing party policy. It’s crucial that we take all of our members with us, existing and new. Here’s some of what I propose:

  • Change selection rules so all new members get to help choose our Westminster candidates
  • Regional policy forums and an online policy discussion site so all members get a say in policy
  • Central staff resource to support our councillors
  • Training sessions and material for organisers and activists and for new branch office-bearers
  • Regular Regional Assemblies to facilitate policy formulation by all Members
  • Youth Academy for the benefit of our younger members

The new Depute Leader will need the close working relationship that I already have with Nicola – I’ve been on her Ministerial team for two years and have always found it useful to be able to knock on her door to discuss issues or go to party HQ, beside the Scottish Parliament, when needed. I’m equipped and ready to step in to deputise for her and take on some of her burden to let her get out and lead the country. I’ve got the credentials to do the job.

I’ve been a Scottish Government Minister handling some difficult and complex departments since 2009 - two years after winning the Ochil constituency - and I’m pleased to have the support of so many of my Ministerial colleagues in this election. I’ve been a councillor and led Clackmannanshire Council when it was acclaimed as the “Best Council in Scotland”. I served as a marine in 45 Commando and am now Minister for Veterans as well as Transport Minister.

What was it he was predicting again? A comfortable victory?

It was going to be a lot more comfortable than just a narrow victory.

People were going to be surprised by the margin of victory for Yes.

Mmmmmm...

You missed the smiley there.

To be honest, I'm not really bothered who wins; I was just looking at it in an abstract sense. If you're a Scottish party targeting a significant number of MPs, it makes sense to split your leadership. Hosie is the only candidate that allows that.

To be fair, he was only expressing an opinion.

A hilarious one which saw him pointed and laughed at at the time...

Well, other than the utter clowns who took great heart from his hilarious prediction, and assumed it was because he was privy to information of great import

Rather than just being a clueless arsehole.

It was the best of times, it was the most hilarious of times. Otherwise sane people telling me it would be 60+ percent yes, with a straight face no less.

Oh how I laughed on the morning after. To quote Wordsworth

Oh! pleasant exercise of hope and joy!
For mighty were the auxiliars which then stood
Upon our side, we who were strong in love!
Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven!

That's certainly how she has pitched it anyway.

Do these new members have a vote on the leadership though? Some parties wont let you for 12 months or so just in case you're a ne'erdowell.

Think people are getting ahead of themselves regarding Hosie over 1 admittedly poor media appearance (the debate) and a ridiculous comment (in hindsight). Other than that, he's done a very good job for the SNP. The worst dirt people can throw on him is a poor prediction?
