Scotland should pick SPL player

Its all a matter of balance. The fact the standard of our Premier League is so bad makes me want to say no. I don't mean to be pessimistic about the game in Scotland but is still on a downward curve. It cannot be argued that the current Premier League is anywhere near the standard of what it was ten years ago. This is compounded by the lack of participation by our nation's top side in the top European Competition. In addition, only three of the last squad for the matches against Poland and Georgia came from the SPFL, and, well, they didn't too badly.

I'd have Ziggy Gordon at right-back any day of the week over Alan Hutton. Sadly, the fact that he plays in Scotland for a small club like Accies hinders any chance of him getting a call-up. He hasn't even been called-up at youth level for Scotland over the years which is quite baffling.

Ziggy Gordon over Alan Hutton. Wow. Hutton was shite on Tuesday but he's been superb for us over the years, imagine Ziggy Gordon playing in and against Poland?

Alan Hutton is good going forward but his defending leaves a lot to be desired at times. He has a bad habit of losing his opponent when man-marking them. Ziggy is maybe not as effective going forward but overall he's a much better defender than Hutton. His timing in the tackle is superb.

<<<Not biased

I think you see just how much Strachan doesn't rate the game up here by him quite rightly not playing Reynolds in Poland and going with Greer instead. I remember before the Georgia game on the radio Richard Gordon saying that Mark Reynolds was a better defender than Hanley and Martin, laughable stuff. I don't think some people realise just how poor the standard is up here. The only time we should be playing non-Celtic players from our top flight is if they are a youngster with potential who hasn't got himself a move yet.

As much as I think it's brilliant what Hamilton are doing, it is in one sense an indication of how dreadful our league is, that a side who didn't even win the Championship can come up and with very few additions are now top of the Premiership. That should tell you all you need to know about the quality, or lack of, in the league.

He has been capped at U19 level.

The suggestion that he should be picked ahead of Hutton is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard. Hutton has been one of Scotland's best players since Gordon Strachan took over, and one bad game against Poland doesn't change that.

Stepping up from Hamilton/Dundee United/Kilmarnock to playing against Germany is a gulf that cannot easily be expressed in words.

Robertson was able to do it - I highly doubt there's many others that could. Look at our u21s to see youngsters playing well in the SPL to be shown as utterly out their depth against teams like Georgia and Slovakia!

Spot on.
