Defensive Midfield

Recommended Posts

Going by the last couple of games it seems that Brown and Morrison are the current preferred choice in that role with James McArthur and Darren Fletcher having to settle for a place on the bench and that's before you consider Charlie Mulgrew, Charlie Adam and Liam Bridcutt.

Is defensive midfield one of our strongest positions now? 5 of the 7 play EPL and the other two for Celtic.

Which order would you rank the current 7 options?

Scott Brown

James Morrison

Charlie Mulgrew

Charlie Adam

James McArthur

Liam Bridcutt

Darren Fletcher

1. Brown

2. Morrison

3. Fletcher

4. McArthur

5. Mulgrew

6. Bridcutt

Haven't seen enough of Bridcutt to make a real call between him and Mulgrew, but I would be surprised if he's as good as McArthur.

I would like to have Fletcher ahead of Morrison as well, but I'm not sure he'll ever get back to playing near the way he was pre-illness.

I'm just glad Charlie Adam is no where near this list.

Forgot about Charlie. He has experience and still playing EPL so probably deserves to be on the list

Poor show.

If he's going to get another crack at the squad, I'd prefer him to be playing higher up, where he's been playing recently for Stoke. Saying that, the young guys - Gauld, Armstrong etc. - should really be getting game time ahead of Adam.

What about Craig Bryson? Again, not sure if he is strong enough defensively (or if he needs to be?), but by all accounts he's playing very well for a very good Derby team.

I put James Morrison as the better and more talented footballer than Scott Brown anyway - granted Broony has improved. Darren Fletcher was an under-rated player in his prime and quite possibly an over-rated player when he wasn't lol.

Morrison i would say is normally more advanced for WBA but has slotted in nicely for us at DM. His dribbling skills help get out of tight spots when necessary.

Brown is the only one atm that HAS to start. His enthusiasm and engine have been exceptional last 2 games. Players don't know what to do when he's running in on them. Plays the right passes aswell.

Having the headache of choosing another 1 or 2 from Morrison, Fletcher, Mulgrew, Mcarthur, Bridcutt and even Adam is a good one to have. All can do a job.

Brown & Morrison for me.

If Fletcher & Bridcutt got a regular run of games at club level then great, both more than capable of filling in.

Don't think Adam has the work rate to play that role for Scotland. His style of play didn't suit under Levein, might be different under WGS.

Mulgrew good option to have for that position, would have him in the squad for the versatility for sure.

Brown and Morrison are now the men in possession. I always fancied the idea of a Fletcher & Mulgrew combo for height and left/right balance. McArthur and Bridcutt will surely get chances too but Charlie Adam must never be allowed to play anywhere near the vicinity of our own penalty area, ever. If he's capped again, it must be further forward, where there is even more competition for places. Always felt he could maybe be our left-sided version of Beckham.

Murray Davidson is a big lad could do a decent shift in here if w were ever stuck, has more to his game though than being a sitter is a box to box type and technical think he has the engine to play here and has well improved the defensive side of his game. Will probably need a move to he English championship if he is ever called up to a squad again

What is so funny he has made squads before, and WGS is always going on about the lack of height in midfield

Rangers will probably sign him next year anyway in Ally is still in charge should earn him a regular place in the squad

And he can link up with his old team mate Robert Snodgrass in a Scotland shirt why not if there is injury and suspensions?

Players will lose there club places in the BPL and others like Bridcut might not have broke into the first team at the Mackams

Watched him play against Killie earlier in the season and he was frankly lazy at times and forever moaning to the ref. He isn't in the same bracket as Brown morrison or fletcher.

Never said that he was said he is a guy that could do a shift if there was injuries and suspensions and loss of form guys losing places down south

Also think he would stroll into your side easily and could actually see you trying to get him on a bosman like Rangers probably will

The played together, at most, 6 times at Livingston whilst Davidson was a youth player and Snodgrass was on his way out. It's hardly an accomplished partnership.

Made the European final with each other for the Scotland under 19 team were Spain beat them in the final after extra time

Would say that is about as accomplished that its going to get for a large amount of the Scottish players at any level

Snodgrass scored that game in extra time if I remember correctly we narrowly went down 2 1

Come on man, what has he done in the last 3 years to suggest he should be anywhere near a Scotland squad nevermind the first 11?
