Quentin Taranbino
It obviously wouldn't happen but, can the queen pretty much do what she wants politically if she has the urge? Could she have technically stopped/granted independence if she wanted? If the queen just decided she wanted to nuke a country, could it happen? Do they officially have any powers and if so what? renton
Basically the unwritten constitution of the UK boils down to this: Parliament promises to do whatever the Queen asks, so long as the Queen promises never to ask for anything.

Granny Danger
I am against a hereditary monarchy as head of state; it's an anachronism. That said I could not imagine the 'powers' being manipulated.

You can get rid of President Blair but ye cannae get rid of her (and her family).
Bully Wee Villa
She does have some power to reject bills by not giving Royal Assent. Realistically though, no monarch has done so since Victoria. Edward VII did manipulate politics by threatening the House of Lords that he would create loads more peers to vote through legislation if they kept opposing laws voted through by the democratically-elected representatives of the people in the Commons. The current monarch's biggest influence politically was when she appointed Douglas-Home as Prime Minister, this was before the Tories had a formal election process for choosing a party leader. milhouse
Just imagine President Blair, I'd take Lizzie every day of the week. A cliched monarchist argument. Elizabeth is carried by favourable public opinion (for whatever strange reason). When she dies, people won't want Charles - and realise they wanted democracy all along. Bully Wee Villa
Putting aside the monarch/President debate for a second... I wonder how they'll justify having a self-confessed adulterer as head of the CofE?
