Great news today that 1500 jobs look safe till 2020. I bet the families of those working there can breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Be interesting to see if there is any criticism of this good news

I thought they were guaranteed with a No vote anyway? That would make this a non story then.

As you were.

Didnt the SNP say they were going to make Faslane the HQ of the Scottish Military and there would be lots of new jobs?

As if a service being provided for the military of a nation of 5m+ as opposed to one over 60m+ is the exact same.

Great news! Billions of pounds to be wasted on ships and nuclear weapons! For the sake of some people getting a 5 year stay of execution in a dying industry. Whilst cutting benefits and continuing austerity. We sure are better together eh

So we would save money on our defence budget in an independent Scotland? Maybe we could invest the money in more important things like the nhs or even jobs that are more sustainable

Aye it's just great that first strike nuclear weapons that we don't have permission to fire are still in Scotland, with more nuclear waste going into our water, still halting further oil exploration, plus the risk to our population if there was a serious accident. PLUS the fact that any collateral damage from such an accident would be acceptable according to the MoD

Yay!

Glad that you've accepted that a NO vote was inevitable.

- Half-witted comment.

Close thread and referendum debate

- Why start the thread then?

Half wit.

Jackie Baillie has the number of jobs at Faslane as 11,000. Does this mean that the other 9,500 are at risk?

I find this a bit weird. There is no mention of Rosyth which Babcock operates also and Rosyth refits the vast majority of the surface fleet. The only maintenance carried out at Faslane is the V-boats in the boat shed. Saying that it's no surprise to see jobs secured at Faslane as all the submarine service is to be based at Faslane from 2015 onwards with all the Plymouth based boats moving up here. That move was announced in 2009. IIRC all submarines will be based at Faslane. Plymouth will become the home of capital and amphibious ships and the future carriers. Portsmouth will become the home to all frigates and destroyers.

If anything I think this contract was always going to go ahead regardless of the vote as it's only a five year contract.

Also the seven Sandown class MCMVs(mine hunters) are staying in Faslane. Barring the two which are permanently deployed out in the Gulf for a period of around two-three years and their crews rotated every nine months. The one thing which the Yes campaigned failed to highlight was what role the mine hunters do out in the gulf. Other countries pay us a fortune to protect the water around the oil rigs, shipping lanes, anchorages and the Straits of Hormuz. I think if the Scottish people knew what role these ships done and it was highlighted that they would've done the same to our rigs then people might've felt a bit more secure about maritime defence of the rigs.

Except that Faslane makes up a small part of the UK's defence whereas it would make up a huge chunk of the Scottish.

I suppose that the main issue is that you can't just expect a current nuclear worker to get a different military role. They'd probably need to move to England or wherever they would have replaced Trident.
