Ira Gaines
Sometimes a shite movie can be made all of the more entertaining by one great performance. Examples. Mila Kunis - American Psycho 2: A horror show of a movie, but Kunis is just godly here. Probably the best example of this sort of thing, because the movie bad on a startling level, and the performance is the polar opposite. Josh Brolin - Jonah Hex: A fucking terrible movie, and Brolin couldn't save it either, despite giving it a proper try. Julianne Moore - Carrie: Yup, the remake, which just doesn't work at all, apart from Moore as Carrie's mum, properly outdoing Piper Laurie from the 70s version. Got any suggestions? AberdeenBud
Andy Garcia in Godfather part 3, Charlize Theron in Devil's Advocate, Johnny Depp in POTC, Kevin Spacey in a few of his films, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and K-PAX prime examples, Tim Roth in Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes remake and pretty much any Nic Cage film. You mentioned Moore DD, Hannibal is a shout for her as well.
Ira Gaines
Thought the first Pirates of the Caribbean was terrific, and Depp wasn't really as good as in the others. He well earned his Oscar nod in the first one though. Surely the entire cast of Devil's Advocate is worth a shout btw? A shocker of a movie, but everyone goes in and throws everything at it. Especially Al Pacino screaming at absolutely everything. Great stuff.

Utter car crash of a plot but Pacino makes it watchable, and as mentioned above Theron is good in it too.
Ira Gaines
Thought Reeves had a rare cracker as well, with more depth than he ever shows. A decent supporting cast in there too. They all put on a show. They managed to drag a shit movie into insanely watchable for me, to the point that I thought it wasn't actually that bad. Ludo*1
Gary Oldman in Dracula. I liked the film quite a bit actually, but it's hard to defend it.

Think Nic Cage in The Wicker Man sort of has this effect on me, purely down to him, but I'm not sure his performance is "good" as such. Certainly memorable though, and always watchable. WaffenThinMint
Brad Dourif in "Wise Blood". Skin crawling movie rescued by Dourif's performance as the self-destroying Hazel Moses leaving you uncertain where his motivations lie - is he an early type of "athieist evangelical", is he seeking revenge on his father, is his behaviour the result of PTSD from his time at the frontline, or is it something else? CityDave
Alan Rickman in the dreadful Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. Not so much he was good or really tested as an actor, he coasted through that mess of a film and he made the film bearable just because he was the only actor in the film that wasn't wooden. Without Alan Rickman that film would have bombed. Just like Will Smith in Independence Day one of the worst and annoying films ever made, only made bearable because of the energy he brought to the film and I liked Jeff Goldblum as well, both looked like they were enjoying this. I suppose easy money. And there's more.....
Banterous
Brad Dourif in "Wise Blood". The book was unfilmable but I have to say Huston did as good a job as he could. Harry Dean Stanton was excellent as was Ned Beatty. Dourif plays Hazel Motes who decides to set up a church without Christ due to his upbringing, as you pointed out, but also because he wants to expose the hypocrisy of the religious evangelists. Flannery O'Connor wrote far better short stories in my opinion. A Good Man is Hard to Find is an example.
Banterous
If a film is sh**e I hate everything about it. If there is a performance that redeems it, it's no longer sh**e imho. Mel Smith in the 1983 thriller Slayground I suppose could be an example but due to him and Peter Coyote, I didn't dislike it as much as the critics of the time
yoda
These stood out in fairly rubbish films. However I'm not sure any of them are "great". Tim Roth - Planet Of The Apes Michael Parks - Red State Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart Philip Seymour Hoffman - Charlie Wilson's War Josh Brolin - W. Peter O'Toole - Troy Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones A couple of films I actually like but get mentioned in "shite movies": Sigourney Weaver - Alien3 George Clooney (Bruce Wayne rather than Batman) and Uma Thurman - Batman & Robin Emma Thompson - Love, Actually

Bobby Skidmarks
Richard Pryor - Superman 3 Tom Hanks - Castaway Joaquim Phoenix - The Village The first one is a little tongue in cheek, but to be honest, he's the only reason to watch Superman 3. Hanks was excellent in Castaway, fair enough he is on camera 98% of the time but the storyline wasn't exactly gripping. Phoenix in the Village was the only high point in it, he played the part brilliantly and obviously showed in latter films like Walk the Line and Her that he could really act. The films ball bag though. I was tempted to go for Matt Dillon in Rumblefish, but i can't seem to make my mind up whether its fantastic or shite. He was great in it though. Guest
Despite being one of the worst films in human history, John Travolta taking the utter piss out of Nic Cage whilst pretending to be him in Face Off was an absolute classic. It's funny because I thought Al Pacino (and Keanu Reeves for opposite reasons) were both just dreadful in that film. The last scene is watch between your fingers stuff IMO. If it was shite performances in great movies then Pacino would get a nod from me for Heat as well.
