Netflix DNS

I'd definitely recommend paying for one - it's about 3 quid a month and you know who's server you're using. It also saves trying to find new ones every few months.

I use overplay smartDNS - they're brilliant, and let you choose which netflix region you want to be in. Others on here use unblockUS, which also has good reviews. Another one is getflix.

The other advantage of a paid one is that you can put it into your router and it lets you access heaps of websites from loads of different countries. I pay for fox soccer2go when County are playing and avoid the hefty cable fees in Australia.

+1 for un-block US. Never had any issues with them

In fact, since I started using their DNS on the PC on BT Infinity general web browsing is faster too :)

^^^ The posts above are talking about using VPN services.

They 'spoof' the websites into thinking you are in another location so the websites automatically send you the content from that region.

The paid services work very well and can be set up to be used by everything so they can still work on things like consoles.

There are also free services but they tend to have their own problems.

E.g you can get an extension for most browsers called media hint which looks a bit dodgy. It was labelled as such by at least one of the major browsers.

I'd be kinda suspicious putting my credit card details into a browser where media hint is installed but if you aren't going to do things like that anyway, it works great for getting Us content.

PS The VPN solutions including media hint can all access Hulu as well as netflix. You can watch shows like gotham 5 days after it's broadcast in the US.

Hulu changed their service last month so this no longer worked but it's back now. They have deliberately loosened their security again so it's easy to access from outside the USA.

un-block US isnt a VPN service. All you need to do is set the device, or router, to use their DNS IPs. You need an account so that you can login to their website and control which country you are "in".

So what's the difference?

You send a request via somebody elses server instead of directly so netflix assumes you are in the US and sends you US content.

A VPN is a secure, direct connection between two machines. To use a VPN service you need to install a VPN client on your device.

All you need to do to use a DNS service is change the relevant IP address in your PC network or router config.

The end result is the same but they achieve it in very different ways.

Are they both different from free proxy sites like Turbohide where you just key in the URL you want on their website?

Yes and no. Generally, they just get around restrictions on networks, like at work etc. They dont change your location so you can access content like Netflix and Hulu. Some do, though, but the ones Ive tried didnt work as reliably as the DNS services

Netflix have started cracking down on this kind of thing now. Unblock-us and others have had their access to paypal removed, after pressure from Netflix and have removed any claims, or even mention, of Netflix from their websites - although others havent, yet.

I lost access at the weeked :( although, oddly, to every country other than the USA (and UK obviously) unblock-us support gave me alternative IP addresses to try but they didnt work. Still waiting to here back, but I think I'm going to try some alternatives tonight.

Its likely the DNS sites will stay ahead of Netflix in the long run but it looks like accessing whatever Netflix content you want is going to become, at least, more of a pain

I'm still using the Hola add on for chrome, although a few mates have installed it recently and it wasn't working for them. I refuse to do anything to my computer for now in case I jinx it.

I had been using Hola which is a free chrome extension. It still works in the sense that I can access the US version but when I try to watch something I get a message saying an unblocker or VPN has been detected and must be disabled in order to watch the video.

I was gonna see what other free services still work but it seems like it might be more hassle than it's worth.

So, it doesnt work then

Strange, though, as the US is the only country I can still get to work

Overplay isn't working for me either, been 3 weeks. Australian Netflix is pretty bad. I'm tempted to cancel both and go with a different Australian streaming service with better content.

That being said, it's getting close to HBO Now season

Theres been a pretty big crack down. I've switched to Getflix but that only works for the USA and Im pretty sure is throttling my download speed to a point where it might simply stop working.

Seemingly, there are now 2 tiers of checks Netflix are doing. Some accounts dont have any checks, some have one and some - ie mine - have both. The first is a DNS checker, presumably against a blacklist of forwarding services, the second is a geo-location checker when you begin to watch something. I think its the second check that the forwarders are having the most trouble with
