I took in Selkirk v Bo'ness today.

Both teams proved to be much as I'd expected, bar Selkirk being even more defensively fragile than recent reports suggested. I felt 4-0 flattered Bo'ness slightly - but by the same token it was 2-0 unless the closing minutes, and that would've flattered Selkirk.

Selkirk began the game clearly nervous which was probably to be anticipated from a young side which had made a good start to the season then had a series of bad results in the run-up. My feeling was that the big crowd - with the away support by far the dominant presence - also intimated their younger boys. Bo'ness far more composed, and astutely came powering from the blocks, 4-3-3, with the aim of putting Selkirk on the backfoot. This they did and it paid dividends with an early goal. Bo'ness went on to dominate the rest of the opening quarter but during the remainder of the half Selkirk found their feet and produced a number of chances but none of them really good ones. But Bo'ness still looked dangerous on the counter though and Gribben added a well-taken 2nd during this spell with the Selkirk defence sleeping. This was a feature of their tie, defensive insecurity.

Second half began much as the first had, with Bo'ness on top and Selkirk at 6s and 7s in defence. However again the Souters turned things, and were looking more capable as the hour approach. Sensibly they decided to go for it - and made an attacking sub on 60 mins in pursuit of the goal that might turn the game. Unfortunately it also left them even more defensively vulnerable, with a left mid going to rightback. They got the chance on 70mins when the keeper parried a rocket volley from Addison but the rebound couldn't be turned-in. Bo'ness then finished things with another from Gribben who waltzed between defenders and prodded past the onrushing keeper, who had made a good save a few minutes before. To be fair to Selkirk they made 2 more attacking subs, valuing a goal over keeping the score down, but late-on Bo'ness had a 2-on-1 and slammed it in.

Selkirk's are fit, have ability on the ball and a good midfield... they need better defenders, and time to gel (it was clear the players still are not fully familiar with each other). Bo'ness were composed, physically robust and shackled the Selkirk strike force well... their front 3 get caught offside far too much, though - which is a bad habit Gribben always had with us, btw.

Just a wee question, what's the deal with money given at this stage?

I follow Hawick RA scores at times as I used to stay there yet they seem to always draw a highland team only to take a humping. Do SFA cover travel expenses at least?

Hope Stirling Uni get a home tie against one of the League 2 sides. When are first round ties scheduled to be played?

They already have been... the Second Round ties are Saturday 4th October.

Just a wee question, what's the deal with money given at this stage?

Going by the rules on the SFA website: up to and including R2 clubs get up to £400 from the SFA if the tie is more than 50 miles away. (From R3 on it comes out of the gate receipts). Of course on top of that there is prizemoney - apparently £2,000 for playing a tie in in R1 - £4,000 in R2 - and so on, although the increments will go up later in the competition. Apparently clubs also get £600 for every match they play in lieu of broadcast rights now that highlight clips are shown on YouTube, by William Hill and on the BBC. Then add gate receipts. It's fairly lucrative.

If the above is correct, then Hawick will have pocketed £3,800; plus their share of 3 gates; plus the best part of another £800 for away trips to Newton Stewart and Aberdeen. However, one of their fans on the EOS sub-forum said that clubs in the Preliminary Round got £2,000 on top of their £2,000 for reaching R1... which if correct would actually make it the best part of £6,600 plus their share of 3 gates.

In terms of today's draw, its interesting to note that the make-up is:

* 10x SPFL2 clubs

* 8x LL clubs

* 8x HL clubs

* 5x Junior clubs

* plus winner of Linlithgow-Fraserburgh replay (Junior v HL)

All other leagues eliminated.

Not too bad then. Least they're not travelling the length of the country to take a skelping for no reason!
