Annan Athletic v Berwick Rangers, Saturday 13th September

Recommended Posts

Intriguing one this. Cameron's revamped team has been playing its best football for several years. We're scoring sackloads of goals, and conceding plenty too. In contrast, Annan have had a surprisingly disappointing start to the season.I thought they were the best side we played in the last campaign, and in Kenny McKay have the best striker in the league whatever the bluetooners might say. Early days yet and Jim Chapman's side will probably put it together at some point, usually against us at Galabank where we got pulverised last season.

CC is going to have to recast his midfield with the Curries being out, and I suspect we may see Steven Tulloch returning at centre back in an attempt to rein in McKay. An eye-wateringly dull 0-0 stalemate in prospect then, though David "Black'n'Gold" Gold may yet have another starring role to play.

McColm will be a decent signing for you; just hope he's a slow starter

BRFC line-up?

Bald

Jacobs Fairbairn Tulloch Hoskins

Willis Notman Cameron Gold Maxwell

Lavery

Subs: Andrews, Dalziel, Miller, Horobine, etc

I'd take a draw given our recent record at Galabank, but if we can keep creating as many chances as we have so far then a win's a reasonable possibility. Good away support at the 4-0 drubbing, so as long as folk have wiped that experience from their memory there should be decent numbers across from Berwick again on Saturday. And lots of big flags.

McColm is a decent player on his day but he's feared as soon as he takes a tackle. Jacobs will have him in his back pocket if he plays RB.

Agree with your line-up, would be happy with that. I genuinely expected we'd appeal Lee Currie's red but not to be. Midfield still looks pretty strong without him, and as you've noted previously, Gold's emergence counters a lot of what we'll miss from him.

Annan have a few on the crock list, looks like Swinglehurst won't make it, Brannon's no training, Davidson's still out.

For me if would have to be...

Mitchell

Chisholm Watson Black Mcniff

Hopkirk Logan McStay McColm

Todd

Mackay

Carcary comes off the bench to grab the winner

I'd go Gray before Willis but he won't be match fit so I really don't understand that one. He's very sharp going forward and though I prefer him central, I don't see any of the others being able to provide the spark you think we'll lack without Currie. Besides, Currie is a central player who'd be replaced by Gold - who's probably the most energetic player in our squad.

No offence to Miller, but I think you're being very kind to him there. He's not offered much going forward (I do rate him, but Willis can offer far more in that department). Dargo & DL require a change of formation which is unlikely, even more so when going to a place we regularly get humped.

OK.

Another consideration though is the number of goals we are conceding. Defending starts in attack and then in Midfield and I think all the others I named defend better than Willis, whilst maintaining enough attacking threat.

Grant you that Gray and Dargo won't start and I doubt Miller will either. CC might pick DL though - its a difficult selection process for the gaffer this week.

In any case, at least 2 others will be missing with some surprise ailment or other. Notman will have fallen down the stairs and Fairbairn will have measles.

When Ross Gray is fit I'd put him ahead of Willis. He gives us a bite and workrate that Willis, for all his elegance and attacking threat, just does'nt. Good options to have though.

Looking at the Annan team above, they've got some cracking players - McKay, Hopkirk and Todd to name but three. Tough game.Though if we can sort out our inability to hold on to a lead and deliver a more even performance across 90 minutes (as opposed to a good half followed by a disappearing act), then we'll be ok.

Very good, but probably not those kind of flags though. And if you knew anything about living in NE England, most of us would secede from Toryland at the first chance. If Scotland goes it's own way, then I hope it inspires regional devolution and real change south of the Border. Cameron's England is not mine.

Soapbox duly put away, back to the football. Looking forward to the game after a couple of weeks without one. Galabank is a favourite away trip of mine, the tractor-infested drive across excepted, and it'd be nice to leave with all 3 points for once.

Nick Walsh is more popular in Berwick than the Tories are in the North-East. Please redraw the border 100 miles south. Then vote Yes.

Meanwhile I'm off to Greece at the weekend and will miss the 4-4 draw.
