Under 21s - Time for a Change?

Recommended Posts

So, the under 21s ended their qualifying campaign for Euro 2015 with a 3-0 win in Luxembourg, but could only finish 3rd in the group. Since Billy Stark has been in charge, we've failed to qualify from our group, and was just thinking that it's maybe time for a change, after 6 years in charge.

Whoever comes in will have some decent talent to work with, and there seems to be a good group moving up from the under 19s, hopefully the fruits of Mark Wotte's labours over the last few years.

Anyway, do we think there is a chance of Stark leaving the job, and if so, who would you like to see get the job?

In January, Billy Stark will have been under 21 manager for 7 years (40 games)!!!

In those 7 years he will have picked up a mighty 14 wins which include:

4 wins over Luxembourg

2 wins over Albania

1 win over Lithuania, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Slovenia, Finland, Slovakia, Austria and Holland

Holland result apart, we haven't been able to beat anyone decent for a long time at that level and haven't qualified since 1996

Stark is in a relatively comfortable job where results don't often come under scrutiny from the fans. It's always the old "ach it's just the youngsters" attitude that has probably kept him about for so long. Needs punted and a new attitude applied from the SFA that the under 21's are more important.

I'm sure mark wotte could pull a name or two from the hat

As long as it's not his own!

Under 21 results aren't really that important in the grand scheme of things. It's a bit like judging a team on its youth set-up; important............ but of more importance are the youngsters coming through and how they add to the "big" team. In that, has Stark been a success, rather than the results?

Nah can't agree. At under 21 level most are old enough where results should be important and should matter; otherwise what's the point?

So who do we bring in to replace him?Its not like wages is flying around for this job.Who ever takes it must do it for the love of the game. And there is not many around that would do it if there was another job on offer somewhere else with more pay.Be good seeing a younger pro do it who has just finished there career and has the badges.someone the young guys can look up to.Who that guy is I have no idea.maybe Barry Ferguson if Clyde goes wobbly.or James McFadden guys that have earned there money and know what playing for Scotland is all about and at a high level

I thought Steven Pressley might've been a shout for this job, seeing as he's worked with youngsters well with young players at Falkirk and Coventry, but seems he's just signed a new 4 year deal there today.

I'd like to see us going for a younger manager next though.
