ardeerultra
I always wondered what would be the process if a good amateur team wanted to step up to junior level? I know they would Obv have to apply to the SJFA and meet the criteria with there ground and other stuff. Has any other team done this before? As i heard there were some teams in the ayrshire premier trying but didn't know if it was just talk.
shanks
Loads mate. For example, in Fife, Kennoway Star Hearts joined at the beginning of last season and weren't far away from gaining promotion in their first season junior. Probably the best example in Fife are Hill of Beath Hawthorn who started in the Kirkcaldy & District Amateur League circa 1977 before joining the juniors in 1982. Tayport as well were a great ammy team and went on to great success in the juniors. Must be loads of other examples too.
Killiepiyo
Why not make our own pyramid involving amateur clubs

JT_92
Is it not the case though that good amateur teams are frequently filled with players capable of playing junior but can't offer the same commitment? I've always wondered about towns without junior teams, for example as far as I'm aware Prestwick doesn't have one. Strange for such a big town. LongTimeLurker
If Scotland ever gets a proper [censored Egypt related word] league system, the amateurs would feed into the juniors subject to grounds being properly enclosed. As things stand at the moment it happens more in the east and north regions than in the west, but Rossvale would be the obvious recent example of an amateur ( albeit youth in their case) club taking the plunge and applying for junior status. Think it's something that ideally needs to happen a lot more often to kick a bit of life back into the central district setup in particular and would definitely do no harm in Ayrshire as well. Im am quite surprised that there is no junior team in prestwick, Ayr only has 1 as well? The whitletts...Strange its a massive area
LongTimeLurker
Junior football was tied into the mining industry (and also its related heavy industries) to a large extent in the central belt. Whitletts was a mining village that later merged into Ayr. Don't think Prestwick ever had any mining, so ot probably wasn't traditional junior football sort of territory? It's a bit daft to still have the distribution of clubs shaped by that sort of thing long after all the mines have closed. The problem in many cases is that when the mine closed, communities lost their economic purpose and the finances that used to be there to support a strong club (there are obvious exceptions to this trend) that was an obvious step up from amateur level. shanks
Hill of Beath Hawthorn and Kelty Hearts both started in division c of Kirkcaldy and District Amateur League in 1975-76 season. Hill of Beath won the league after a victory against Kelty in a seven goal thriller in a play off at Falkland, only because they scored 6 of the 7 goals Ballingry Rovers won a fair amount of trophies at amateur level as well before stepping up to juniors Sorry, Gordon. Forgot to mention Kelty Hertz. Would I be right in saying that in their first season junior they used to take at least one double-decker to away games? The one
I can vaguely remember the old ardeer social club in new street which I take it supported the football team. Am I right in this assumption?
omar
I noticed Aberdeen University in the draw for the Junior Cup. A departure from other University clubs - Edinburgh and Stirling leaving the East of Scotland and Caledonian Leagues respectively. Heriott Watt remain in the East of Scotland, whilst Glasgow and Strathclyde are still in the Caley. The 3 latter named clubs could certainly fulfil junior criteria with grounds, etc and would probably be a welcome addition.
Hristo Stoichkov
Who was the last new Junior team in Ayrshire? Can't remember a new member for a long, long time. Prestwick have a fairly active amateur team. You could make the Oval a Junior ground with minimal work.
theesel1994
Girvan. Prior to that I can't think of any in decades. The last club I heard mention of trying to join from Ayrshire Amateurs was Dailly Ams but that came to nothing.

ardeerultra
I am not sure on that one tbh, a social club would have been booming if that was there at the time

Pretty sure it was connected to the football club. Maybe talking late 70's it closed.
917
Prestwick's amateur team are glenburn MINERS welfare so I think that can put that theory to bed ( although I do agree traditionally it has been mining villages that had junior teams) Troon is local as is whittlets I don't actually believe there was ever a need for another junior team within such a narrow radius. Big towns but all close together throw Ayr united and those that follow killie rangers and Celtic there are really enough punters to support another junior team ?? The one
Maybe I'm getting mixed up because it was called the thistle club and the supporters frequented there. Any older gentlemen can enlighten us?
