Falkirk v Queens

Recommended Posts

Yet another hard game.

We will have Fowler back.

We may at best have 2 of the 6 players back who are out with injury.

The 2 week break has come at a good time for us.

We have a poor record at Falkirk always seem to let a late goal in.

Would take a point

Definitely a game where the rubber hits the road. A defeat would really consign us to being woefully out of touch very early in the season (regardless of having already played all of the big three). Up until the departure of McGrandles, I would have been relatively confident of getting a win. Now I am much less convinced. It's all down to who we bring in from this point forward. If the answer to that is "no-one", then we'll still weave lots of pretty patterns, and make mistake after mistake at the back.

I saw Falkirk against Rangers and thought you looked very tidy and unlucky on the night. Has that been how you have performed so far or did you step it up for that one ?

Probably best we have played, both games against C'beath were a struggle and the Hibs game could have went either way.

Whereas I thought we controlled the game better against Rangers without taking our chances.

We will need at least a defender, midfielder and striker before we meet you if I'm to feel anywhere confident.

Added to the loss of Miller and Kingsley, and the loss of Vaulks as a right back, and with Loy as lone striker...

I'd forgotten about Miller and Kingsley. Is Vaulks not a better centre half anyway? Or has he just not been replaced at right back?

I take it, Houston hasnt done a good enough job replacing the players who have left?

What happened at Stranraer?

Maybe our manager could pick a certain Youth Coach at the Club's brains re; how to play Falkirk ;) He was part of the Stranraer team who knocked Falkirk FC out of the Petrofac Training Cup last Saturday in 90 minutes. :thumsup2

We've got our sub at LB from last season, Liam Dick, starting. He's ok but not Kingsley.

Vaulks is better at CB but we've not had a decent replacement at RB.

Midfield we've never really replaced the bite and reading of the game of Millar - Taiwo hasn't shown much. Jones may fill the gap.

Up front, Loy is too lightweight and prone to dropping deep to play as lone striker, which is why we had Beck - we need a foil for Loy.

The only change that hasn't weakened us is McDonald for McGovern.

And all that is excluding McGrandles, who started every single league game last year.

Very tardy bunch of signings has left us looking a bit lopsided. Make no mistake, we should have scored three or four goals against Stranraer, but the simple fact is that we didn't.

Once again we have got ourselves off to a seriously slow start, and so far, we are just as slow getting into individual games too.

From January, we have lost Kingsley, Fulton and McGrandles (so that's all of the family silver gone) as well as the heartbeat of the team, Mark Millar. Mark Beck departed the scene along with Jonny Flynn, but both were straightforward squad players. On top of that, McGovern departed too.............and he is probably the only one we have replaced on a like for like basis.

I don't know of the first team squad is bigger than last season, but it certainly doesn't feel like it.

Taiwo looks good enough, and Cooper has the talent, but not quite sure about the application.

Vaulks has the application, and is utterly commited to the cause, but can be really questionable in his positional sense and reading of the game............the entire back four is a real worry, on league duty, haven't looked capable of stopping any team from scoring.

Given that Duffie is still out, our best starting eleven is going to be something like) MacDonald, Dick (Leahy), McCracken, Vaulks, Shaughnessy, Taiwo, Alston, Sibbald, OTJ, Smith and Loy.

Given that three of that team have played one solitary game between them, then there's a lot of unknowns. I think the pressure will land immediately on the shoulders of Smith to become the attacking engine of the team.

I still reckon our squad is too small to deal with anything more than a couple of injuries/suspensions, is seriously lacking up front, is nowhere near good as last season in midfield, and looks capable of horrendous mistakes at the back. Other than that, it's all looking good.

I am pretty sure we won't see much more of Dick. Leahy will play there I am sure now. If he performs he will keep his place. The balance in the midfield will be interesting. I assume it will be OTJ and Taiwo holding with Alston/Cooper, Sibbald, Smith behind Loy.

OTJ and Shaughnessy will add some much needed high and strength.

Still sounds like its been a disappointing start to the season. Or is that the most obvious statement ever?
