Lowland Development League

Having a team in the under 20s league would probably be a start but certainly something you wouldn't want to miss out on possibly by signing either a youth team from Edinburgh or surrounding to re-present the club?

Not sure it'll act as a carrot for too many players to sign. They could still get a lower league or even LŁ team and get knocked out. Do think the future for ALL teams is to have a 20s though and surprised that more teams don't.

If all the teams rumoured to be putting teams in actually happen, the ones I've heard of are ..Spartans, Edinburgh City.Leith Athletic, Edinburgh Uni, Heriot Watt Uni, Whitehill, Preston Athletic, Cumbernauld, BSC Glasgow, East Kilbride, and Edusport. A wee bit of travelling and a free week for a team every week. Anybody know if any other teams are being put forward?

LTHV have added an U20s section to their website.

What about the likes of Tynecastle and Civil Service Strollers?

EDIT: CSS confirmed here: http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport/football/local-football/civil-service-enter-team-in-lowland-u-20-league-1-3796863

It normally starts at the end of August, once summer holidays are over and the schools are back, IIRC.

Fair enough. That's where their Edinburgh campus is based, IIRC.

EDIT: I also see that their original campus has moved from training at Ravenscraig, living in Hamilton and studying at Coatbridge, into Glasgow - training at Lesser Hampden - and their South of Scotland League team has also relocated from playing at Hamilton Palace to playing at Galabank in Annan.

From the LL website ...

We are delighted to announce details of next seasons Development League.

The Development League will see twelve teams compete in what is sure to be an exciting new league.

The teams taking part are: BSC Glasgow, Civil Service Strollers, Cumbernauld Colts, East Kilbride, Edinburgh City, Edinburgh University, EduSport Academy, Heriot-Watt University, Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale, Preston Athletic, Spartans and Whitehill Welfare.

Development League secretary Gary McClelland said, We are delighted that we have so many teams interested in playing in the League.

This is a great opportunity for the clubs taking part to compete at a very high standard and I am sure fans will enjoy watching the football on offer

The league will kick off on Friday 28th August 2015 and full details of fixtures will be published on our site when they are released.

If you would like any information on the league please email developmentleague@slfl.co.uk

Great to see the league growing and a massive congratulations should go to Gary for his efforts in getting the league to where it is now. Looks like a good season ahead for the young boys.

Yep, it must be quite a while since there has been as many as 12 clubs in the league and it looks like a good mixture of teams and quality.

That said a bit surprising to see no Leith Athletic or Tynecastle among them, that's quite disappointing. I wondered if Stirling Uni might put a team in as well given the other universities do. Aside from that everyone you'd expect has entered - realistically it's probably too far for the clubs from the Borders or D&G.

Have Craigroyston ever run U21s or U19s?

One thing it does indicate is the rather haphazard arrangement of U20 football in Scotland as discussed earlier in the thread. Next season the makeup is:

SPFL Development League ... 17 clubs, 34 league dates (solid from start of August to end of April!!), someone without a game each week

SPFL East Development League ... 7 clubs, playing 3 times = 21 league dates, someone without a game each week, nothing listed after mid-March

SPFL West Development League ... 8 clubs, playing 3 times = 21 league dates, nothing listed after mid-March

Lowland & EOS Development League ... 12 clubs = 22 league dates (plus various cup competitions)

Aberdeenshire Development League ... 11 clubs presumably = 22 league dates, someone without a game each week

If it was standardised into something like 16 teams in the SPFL Development league, and 3 regional leagues of 12-14 below it, things would seem a lot better IMO. More sensible numbers and travelling distances in the regionals might even encourage further clubs to join, too, especially from outlying areas.

Was down at the "Pans" visiting in laws when the nephew said that Preston were playing "a team if the toon" at Middleshot,so choice of soaps or footie ,off I went.

Preston u20s against Edinburgh city 20s it turned out to be and it was a bit of a doing for the Edinburgh boys. Preston really controlled the whole game, their players were quicker, seemed fitter and never let the city lads get any time on the ball. City players on the other hand didn't look very organised, they tried to build it from the back but the Preston players were on top of them very quickly and after two or three passes they always seemed to lose the ball in the midfield the ball kept coming back faster than the city defenders wanted it to. The game ended up a 7-0 win to the home team but an offside decision a poorly taken or well saved penalty and three or four other stops by the city keeper and other last ditch defending by the two centre halfs saved city from a real heavy defeat. The city centre forward never got any service but he kept trying all game. The keeper, two centre halfs and the lone striker were the only ones to come away with pass marks in my opinion the rest of the team will have to improve an awfy lot before the season starts or it will be a long long season for the city team.

The Preston lads were really well organised played as a team and if they continue in this way, they will do really well , couldn't really pick out any individual but the midfield unit played the city lads of the pitch, dominated their city opponents and never let them settle, this to me was the biggest difference, city didn't look nearly as competent as the Preston lads

New season just round the corner, hope the various clubs in the league give their u20s teams as much attention as the first teams get cos if it wasn't for a throw away comment I wouldn't have known this game was on. Roll on the new season and best of luck to all the teams.

It probably wasn't an official game - e.g. it isn't on the SFA's referee appointment lists, infact you will very rarely find U20 friendlies listed. Only one I've actually seen listed was BSC Glasgow v St Rochs on Thursday night. I presume it saves a bit of money - and is probably more flexible for triallists and rolling subs and so forth.

Hopefully clubs do promote their U20s once the competitive season gets going, as they are important and could get a wee crowd on Friday nights too. Presumably clubs with 3G use their own stadiums - including Broadwood potentially? - and City used Meadowbank last season.

Some clubs are starting to get their fixture lists up, e.g.:

Preston Athletic - http://www.prestonathletic.co.uk/the-match/u20s-team-fixtures-and-results/

Spartans - http://www.spartansfc.com/u-20s-fixtures-and-results/

Edinburgh City - http://www.clubwebsite.co.uk/edinburghcityfcu19s/87191/Fixtures

Few clubs are on Youth Cup duty on the penultimate weekend in August - then the stuff proper gets underway with the Qualifying League from August 28th to October 2nd. Then it's the League itself from October 9th to December 11th.

League resumes on January 15th and finishes on May 13th. Most of March & April looks to be taken-up by Challenge Cup and Knockout Cup action.

Cup finals on May 20th & 27th.
