To be fair I think the charity in question (ALS) raised 1.5m last year and has already raised 13m in the last month. I've not been nominated and if I was, I wouldn't do it. I'd happily donate the money to ALS but I'm fucked if I'm standing out on my balcony pouring water over myself in full view of the passing traffic. What does that achieve? I know it's a bit of a laugh but it's not exactly practical. Everyone I saw to begin with were doing it for ALS.....now all of a sudden "I'm doing the Macmillan Ice Bucket Challenge"...f**k off. Basically one charity has had a decent idea to drum up awareness, publicity and donations....and the band wagon jumpers have deicded that all the coo lkids are doing it so they will and donate it to something completely different from the reason it was started. SimplyTON Posted August 19, 2014 Share Posted August 19, 2014 Did it on Sunday for ALS.ca after being nominated by a friend on FB $10 donated to ALS and nominated 3 further people that will hopefully see more donations for particular charity (UK, CA or USA)The quotes coming out of ALS.ca and ALSA show that donations are up over 10 fold from last year which can surely only be a good thingOf course you could temper this with "only so much cash to go around some other charity losing out" argument Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's very much different from sky diving, bungee jumping etc. The ice bucket challenge doesn't benefit anyone directly, but it does give your friends a laugh and makes them more likely to donate to your chosen charity. Our managing director has got in on the act: Vince McMahon, Bill Gates, Zuckerberg amongst others have all taken part, Gates I believe donated a considerably amount too. I struggle to see an issue with that. I've yet to meet anyone who had their skydive paid for out of the donations though, would be very immoral if not illegal. The 'rule' is once you're nominated you either do the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and donate £10/$10 or you don't do the challenge and donate £100/$100. Very few people know what they are 'raising awareness of or who the money should even go to. Seriously, if people care that much about raising cash then just donate money.
