Do we miss each other?

Recommended Posts

I dont, since Rangers were liquidated and the succesor formed in 2012 pay much attention to goings on at Ibrox and threads and forums involving them, I take a passing interest in their results and have a wee chuckle at their setbacks but, I have noticed on this website and in the media in general fans of other clubs all are of the opinion we all desperately miss the battle between the two clubs and Celtic in particular both on and off the field have suffered indirectly.

I wondered what you bears and my fellow Celtic fans thought?

As a club I think, only an opinion of course that its not an issue for The Rangers as they have bigger issues to deal with, ongoing boardroom strife, dodgy directors, financial concerns and less than smooth passage up the league system, a one off cup tie would not be something I think their fans would welcome as it would probably result in a pasting, although to be fair it would be a bit tighter than had it been a year or two ago.

From my point of view I must admit I miss the hype and the event of 'derby day', there was no better feeling than winning one of those, especially a league decider or cup final, I miss these fixtures and Celtic fans who say they dont are being a bit flexible with the truth, aside from that though I dont miss them as a club and have continued attending games, domestic and european as much as I used to, I havent lost interest in supporting my club due to the absence of an historic rival.

The board at Celtic will say otherwise but it has had a negative effect on the club, both in terms of an element of decreased attendences and, moreso Id estimate in the ability to attract a higher quality of player, Sutton, Hartson, De Boer and the likes probably didnt automaticaly think our league was the highest standard they could attain but, the opportunity to play in THAT fixture had to be a factor of some sort, id guess that trying to get decent quality and household names to join Celtic to play Kilmarnock and Hamilton will be more difficult, although guarenteed European football and domestic honours can compensate... and a shit hot salary too no doubt

Overall id say I miss the fixture as a singular factor only and not the general rivalry etc, I dont think the clubs miss each other or need each other as much as others say, they do to a point though.

What do you boys and girls reckon?

I certainly miss the excitement of derbies and close-run title races.

On the other hand, there really wasn't any alternative to refusing Rangers Mark II entry into the SPL, unless we were willing to reduce the national sport to a bad joke, around the level of American wrestling.

Given the choice between that and treating New Rangers like any other new club looking for admission, then a couple of less exciting seasons have been no hassle at all, and have been a very small price to pay for a game that isn't entirely corrupted.

As a Celtic ST holder, I have no problem admitting that the league ( from my pint of view ) was better when Rangers were there..... Of course I miss the derby games but also ( and more importantly ) the challenge for the league... for example, there have been plenty games where Celtic have been 1-0 up early on against a " lesser " team - you pretty much know that that will be that so you start wishing the game would hurry up and finish ( normally because it's always freezing high up in the North stand where my seat is ) - where as before you were thinking " we need 2 / 3 etc " because rangers might beat this team by 4 and it might come down to goal difference.... What's done is done though and Rangers deserved to go ( they had to go ) but it HAS had an effect on Celtic - IMO 8)

No interest in them being in a position to actually challenge, or anything.

Rhatbhoy in intellectual consistency dilemma in only 20 minutes. Not enough time to neck a bottle of wine even by my standards..

2/3 wouldn't have been much use to you if they got 4...

Not really - I used to enjoy the close competition. Nowadays, I'd quite welcome a decade long sequence of embarrassing 4-0 scuddings of your mob while you hover around the middle-bottom of the table, and I'd prefer that to any actual challenge from you.

While I'd definitely welcome a title challenge from almost any team in Scotland with open arms, that doesn't include you.

OK so that was what you meant when you said, "I certainly miss the excitement of derbies and close-run title races.". I can see how I got confused. Thanks for clarifying.

One of my favourite seasons was 1985-86, when I was a kid - a highly competitive title race went to the last day, twists and turns all along, four derby matches, and your mob finished fifth. That would do me fine and would be my first choice for how the next few seasons pan out.

One of them was 4-4 at Ibrox, was it not?

If I remember right, and that would be grand - lots of goals and excitement, we don't lose, and there's no league challenge from them.

I know this sounds petty, and it is, so I won't pretend otherwise. I'd compare it to a Villa-supporting friend of mine who once responded to my naive question - "Wouldn't you like Birmingham City back in the top flight, so Villa can pump them?" - with the response "God, no. Keep them down, where they belong".

And after a few Rangersless seasons, I can see what he means.

Strange but i haven't missed them at all, i used to enjoy it all but their constant moaning about everything and anything, being offended at the drop of a hat, always using every dirty little trick and constantly running to authorities ruined it all for me.
