The 2014 NCAA College Football season kicks off on the 28th of August where the next crop of NFL players can show there talent to the world. The Preseason rankings are due out on the 17th of August. This college season see’s the introduction of the 4 team College Football Playoff system which is replacing the previous BCS system. Under the new system 4 teams play in 2 semi-finals with the winners advancing to the College Football Championship game. The Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Peach Bowl will rotate as the hosts as the Semi Final games. The new system uses a committee of 13 experts to select the 4 participants and there seeds.

The Jamies Winston led Florida State Seminoles are defending National Champions after their thrilling win over the Auburn Tigers in last year’s National championship game. Their journey to a back to back championship will be a tough one that will see them host powerhouses such as Notre Dame and Florida while making tricky trips too Louisville and Miami. Current Heisman Trophy winner Winston’s off season has seen him arrested for shoplifting and being accused of rape. The rape charge was later dropped and no charges were filed.

The 2012 and 2013 National champion Alabama Crimson Tide will again be tipped by many to regain their crown though they will have to do it without their influential QB AJ McCarron who they lost the NFL draft in May. In Head Coach Nick Saban they have one of the most successful College coaches of recent times and he has added a very good recruitment class to his already talented squad. Bama will rely heavily on explosive Junior Running Back TJ Yeldon who has an incredible burst of speed that makes him almost uncatchable if he reaches open field. Bama have though lost 2 very important and talented members of their defence with both Ha-Ha Clinton Dix and CJ Mosley being drafted in the 1st round of May’s NFL draft.

The Auburn Tigers have a great chance of returning to the National Championship. In Nick Marshall they have a reliable quarterback who is surrounded by a crop of young talented receivers that includes Sammie Coates and Stanton Truitt. On defence the loss of Dee Ford is big but the line will be anchored by Gabe Wright and will include a talented bunch or sophomores. Greg Robinson is the biggest loss on the offensive line for the Tigers and he will be hard to replace.

This season also sees the introduction of a 4 new FBS teams. Old Dominion joins the C-USA while Appalachian State, Georgia Southern and Georgia State join the Sun Belt conference.

This season sees a game being played at the Aviva Stadium in Ireland where the UCF Knights meet the Penn State Nittany Lions on August 30th. There was a game played there 2 seasons ago when the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame ran out comfortable winners against Navy.

This season see's some very talented Quarterback’s in the college game. Baylor’s Bryce Petty is coming off a 4,000 yard season in the explosive Bears offence and has great weapons around him again this year. Brett Hundley of the UCLA Bruins is a natural born leader and was voted captain of the Bruins last year in his freshman year. He has great vision and a strong arm that many experts believe will take him to the NFL as a 1st round pick in the future. The Ohio state Buckeys have probably the best dual threat Quarterback in the college game just now in the form of Braxton Miller. This guy has 4.40 speed and a strong arm. His only flaw is the amount of time he sits due to taking hits in the running game. Oregons Marcus Marriota decided to come back for his senior year after a very successful season last year. This guy has incredible speed and a very decent arm, especially when on the run. He has the ability to be a top 10 draft pick and the Ducks season may rely on just how well he performs. Sean Mannion of the Oregon State Beaver’s is probably the most Pro ready Quarterback in the college game this year. He is coming off a 4,622 yard / 37 Touchdown season. More of the same is expected this season.

In the “Power conferences” of the college game my predictions are as follows

There is a face in Texas as former Louisville Head Coach Charlie Strong replaces the legend Mack Brown as the Longhorns Head Coach. This is by far the biggest football programme in the USA and their fans demand success. Unfortunately for them the talent just isn’t there for the Longhorns just now. I do expect them to be a top 25 team by years end but I don’t see them winning the Big 12 or challenging in any of the “Premier” bowl games. The Big 12 this season will be a battle between the Oklahoma Sooners and the high octane Baylor Bears. The Sooners were very impressive when crushing Bama in the Sugar Bowl last season and I expect them to be dominant in the Big 12 this season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Sooners as one of the 4 playoff teams in January.

The Big10 should be the Ohio state Buckeyes to lose. There in my opinion the best team in the conference and on paper and in Urban Meyer they have an experienced Head Coach who has only lost 2 games in 2 years in Colombus. Nebraska, Wisconsin and possibly Michigan State will put up creditable challenges. Il say a Ohio State vs Michigan State Big10 Championship game

The SEC could be a dogfight this year with the Crimson tide, Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M all in with a chance of winning it. The winner usually goes to the National Championship game and Im sure that the winner of this year’s title will be 1 of the 4 playoff teams. A&M will undoubtedly be a weaker side without Johnny Manziel so Il say that the Aggies are the least likely of the 4. Watch out for the Missouri tigers that may surprise a few.

PAC 12 is the Oregon Ducks to lose. There closest challenge will probably come from an invigorated USC with Stanford and Washington also giving them a run for their money. The Ducks though are a class above the rest as it stands and in Marriota at QB have a terrific offensive weapon. Il say a Oregon vs USC Pac12 championship game

The ACC should go to the defending champion Seminoles. There just better on paper than everyone in the conference. I do expect the the North Carolina Tar Heels too be competitive and Clemson should win at least 9 games. Elsewhere Miami are beginning to rebuild that once successful programme and Georgia Tech have ability. Il say a Florida State vs North Carolina ACC championship game

Who would be your "top 4" to make the finals then?

Oregon, Florida State, Oklahoma and the winner of the SEC who will in my opinion be either Auburn or Alabama.

Teams like Notre Dame and Ohio State will need to have undefeated seasons to make it in my opinion.

Yourself?

Honestly mate not a clue I've been a massive NFL fan for the best part of a decade but whenever I have watched NCAA football it's more watching specific players for draft knowledge rather than following the format closely.

I will try and get more into it this year. I'd guess Florida State and Oregon will be decent because they seem to have the two best QBs in the country, and Bama always seem to dominate defensively so even if they have an offense that can put up a few big plays a game that could be enough for them to win a lot of games.

some potentially excellent games the opening week.

texas a&m at south carolina

clemson at georgia

florida state vs oklahoma state (in dallas)

wisconsin vs lsu (in houston)

as i say every year, the players in the nfl may be better, but going to an nfl game doesn't come close to the experience of going to a college football game, and really the entire weekend in a college town. repeat championship from the noles please. :)

So there are playoffs to decide the championship winners, but the teams who play in those playoffs are still decided on subjectively. Seems like the same problems will arise but just a little less meaningful.

Still not got a CFB team but we'll see if I'm attracted to anyone this year. Also, I find it hilarious that the first trait to describe Brett Hundley is that he's a team captain. Don't think he'll be up there with Mariota, Winston (and Petty?) if he doesn't improve a lot more.
