Security At The Games

I've noticed the past 3 days there are about 40 police around the SECC/HYDRO with pistols AND sniper rifles, anyone else think this is a tad too far? fair enough to have a few specialists on the ground but they are walking about like it's going out of fashion. Feels a bit unnerving walking about thinking there is a high risk of some form of attack. No doubt talking out my arse though

Sergeant Wilson knicked Carol Kirkwoods bra, hence the Dibble.

It's not just your every day police you're seeing driving about either, it's the armed response units. and i'm seeing military helicopters almost on a daily basics

Its one of the main reasons why I very rarely attend major events (sporting or otherwise).

Some folk don't seem to mind the massive increase in security in our daily lives, and sometimes I wish I was one of those people.

I was at the SECC "complex" today and didn't notice any armed police*. I've seen more armed police in Inverness over the past week than I have in the first Saturday of a major sporting event in Scotland's biggest city.

A couple of armed response units were driving about but that's not highly unusual. I've seen them driving about before, during "non games" time.

*I'm not saying they aren't there. They obviously are but I didn't see a particularly heavy police presence.

I have friends that stay in the City Quay in Dundee and they have said it has been horrendous in and around their flats because all of the Commonwealth shooters are staying in the Apex so their is a constant armed police presence and officers stopping people and checking people walking around the Quay.

The security does seem mega tight, and to think I have seen guys go fucking apeshit after a scrawny steward asks if they have anything in their pockets before the football. God knows how they would cope going to one of these events!

That's why I choose not to go chief! My apeshit is very rarely on public display - an inner apeshit if you will.

There was enough firepower in the concourse after the Judo this evening to stop a herd of elephants.

If they'd opened-up it would've been like the bank robbery scene from Heat.

Must say I don't recall noticing any at previous events or around the city, bar the odd pairing in stations.

Was at the 7s and badminton today. Massive police presence and airport like security checks but everyone was in good spirits (spectators, staff and police) so it wasn't a noticeable issue for me. I actually feel better with good policing rather than more threatened.

Totally ott, G4S messing up the Olympics can hardly justify the mammoth over-reaction in Glasgow, 30 min to get into Glasgow Green, 45 to get into Ibrox, but could walk about the Merchant City Festival unfettered and per square inch was just as busy. In terms of public safety where's the difference.

Must say I've been through security thrice over the last 2 days - twice getting into the SECC Precinct or whatever they call it, once into Kelvingrove - and it took about 30 seconds. Were there big delays at Ibrox? (Going tomorrow).

That's what I really don't understand, how is this any different to other events? We are happy to have plenty of 50000+ attended events throughout the year without any of the extra security that's deemed necessary at the games, what makes rugby 7s or athletics inherently more dangerous than football or a gig?

The only problem I know at the 7's (according to one of the mounted officers) was cause by a large number of fans tuning up for the afternoon session turning up before the morning one finished

When I go into work I'm told to turn up half an hour early for the security checks, which takes 10 seconds, so I'm left with half an hour doing nothing, I don't know if it is busier for spectators coming in though, I think they have done a reasonably good job with the whole SECC/HYDRO area, just a bit unnerving eating lunch and sitting next to armed police with guns on the table.

Yup. Allow 30-45 mins to join a long queue and go through airport type security. As someone said, people are in good humour so moved along ok but a bit OTT.

I got to Ibrox around 5 yesterday for the evening session and it took less than 5 minutes to go through security.

How did u manage that?! I got there at 4.30pm, arriving from the Clyde tunnel end. We were sent down the road behind the away end, to the end of the queue which had snaked all the way round behind the Govan road stand.

Did u arrive from the other end?

I havent had a problem with security at any venue so far, that includes Opening Ceremony, Cycling, Weightlifting and Swimming. Even when I turned up at the swimming last night 15 minutes before the start, I was in my seat before the first race. It's all gone very smoothly so far.

I've probably buggered myself for the Rugby this morning now ....
