Just book your own hotel and flights and save a fortune,i use Jet2 and Ryanair for flights,Alpharooms for my hotel and if I need a transfer I use Suntransfers or Resorthoppa.

I got 8 nights in Alcudia Sept for £550 doing it this way and the same package for 7 nights with a travel agent worked out at £1100.

If you can leave within two weeks you will find a few bargains. People may have paid deposits a year ago but can't manage. That's why there are a few cheap holidays. Since i retired that's what my wife and i do, had some superb bargains, especially to Italy. Hope that helped.

I wandered into Thomas Cook a couple of years back on a Saturday morning in June. We flew to Rhodes on the following Wednesday from Glasgow and paid c£220pp for flights, transfers and 2 weeks self catering accommodation  (3 star). Got an apartment with a great view from our balcony. Absolutely excellent value. Could have had a place without a pool for £160 but didn't really believe that hotels had an open pool policy (they do).

I had a heart attack 10 days in which kind of took the edge off it but it would have been spectacular value had I lasted the 14 days!

I remember you posting about it. How long did you stay in hospital in Athens and did the insurance company stump up ok?

Last November I used Black Friday to book a week in Madeira from Glasgow with Thomson for £220 each Inc transfers and b&b at a 4 star hotel. Excellent value again.

I'm never too fussed about destination although I try to avoid places where I'll find folk in football themed pubs, drinking lager and lime and bad mouthing the locals.

And I wouldn't go to Kavos or its ilk because that's horrific club photo territory at my age!

6 days and eventually. Absolute c***s about it though. I got 3 days to see Athens though - got out of hospital on the Sunday and didn't fly home until the Thursday so I could go direct to Edinburgh. Thought it was a bit of a cowp but they were having some local difficulties with very few people in possession of a pot to piss in.

Aye, I felt for your wife having to trawl Athens for a working cashpoint with you in hospital after a heart attack and the insurance company fucking you about. I've stopped just buying whatever is the cheapest insurance since then.

Only done one last minute holiday, kind of depends what you want from it I'd guess. My mate changed jobs last summer and had two weeks in the middle so we booked up and cycled around Munich for a week and winged it. Just found random hostels and stuff as we went, think we got quite jammy though.

Aye lesson learned. I'd been discharged from a private hospital in Rhodes before they said they'd pay for it - multiple thousands of pounds worth of treatment by then. And the doctor was armed to the teeth with tales of guys coming in with brokenbones after falling off a jetski or whatever only to find that their insurance  wanted f**k all to do with them and the public liability insurance these folk have isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Well I wouldn't call it the Edinburgh of the south put it that way. And as far as I'm aware nobody is yet trying to con folk out of £20 for an open top bus tour of Bo'ness.

PS - I come from Linlithgow.
