New Zealand/Auckland

So I am moving to New Zealand next month for a year and have digs sorted in Auckland with a mate until

I find my feet. What are people's thoughts on Auckland and New Zealand in general?

Also I work as a Staff Nurse so if anyone has any nursing agency contacts that would be appreciated too.

I've just come back from a month in New Zealand visiting family on holiday.

Although I only really had time to visit Auckland for a day or two, for a large city it is remarkably clean and in the CBD at least felt safe.

Really thoroughly enjoyed New Zealand, the people were affable and very accommodating. The pace of life is slower outsie Auckland and being honest I'm jealous of you being able to move out there, it's something I want to do in the future even if only for a year.

I don't know how much time you will get to explore the country but if any of the advice on this thread helps, all the better:

Did a fair number of the things atfccfc mentioned and it was brilliant. The Tamaki cultural night at Rotorua in particular was a highlight, as was the stunning scenery of Milford Sound, especially after the snow.

All the best with your move, it'll be a great year and hopefully you get plenty of opportunity to explore both the North and South Islands!

I spent a month in NZ and loved it, started off in Auckland for a few days and thought it was pretty cool. Was a bit strange and hard to compare it to anywhere i had been before but it had a certain niceness about it although i didn't see that much of it. As a country New Zealand is amazing and far more chilled out than i thought it would be, people were all very friendly and pleasant and slightly eccentric and over all it was a hell of an experience being there and i would love to be the one heading out there for a year !

Are you confined to Auckland for work? Auckland is an OK city but nothing more than that, whereas New Zealand in general is an absolutely brilliant country.

Kiwi's from elsewhere call Aucklanders JAFA's (just another fucking Aucklander). Whilst that obviously reeks of wee man syndrome, I can see why they dislike the place if not the people. I think it's the city with the highest percentage of inhabitants living in suburban areas on earth, so whilst it sprawls on for miles and miles, the city centre itself is pretty underwhelming. I thought it was like Glasgow but with less to do.

I can't recommend enough that you get out there and see the rest of the country, especially the south island. I lived in Queenstown for 9 months, I'll never forget that place. If you do stick in Auckland though I advise making Father Ted's pub your local. It's a bit rough round the edges but the drinks are well cheap by NZ standards and it's always lively for one reason or another. Perhaps nostalgia is clouding my judgement, but I love that wonderful shithole.

Cheers guys.

I'm not confined to Auckland, I will be starting there as I have a couple of mates that have offered to put me up for a while. I'm trying to get registered with a Nursing Agency that is nationwide too. I'm not a massive city fan and prefer quieter regions. I also have a mate in Hawke's Bay and also another in Wellington.

I plan on doing some serious travelling having already taken 8 months to travel around Canada last year too.
